In the past 2-3 years, literally one NLU/Jindal student has died every month on average. While some deaths were due to medical reasons, and some due to car accidents, many seem to be related to suicide. It’s getting worse and worse because the VCs are mostly boomers in their 60s who do not understand that Gen Z is going through a deep-seated mental health crisis. It’s because of a dangerous cocktail of many factors: competition in academics and jobs, COVID lockdowns, social media toxicity, excessive materialism, a culture where casual hookups have replaced genuine feelings, and polarisation/cancel culture from both woke and right-wing people. Apart from a generation gap, the VCs also suffer from a socio-cultural gap, because they are mostly from semi-urban towns and conservative social backgrounds. They see no problems in shaming girls for wearing shorts, asking students their caste, imposing strict campus curfews etc. They also attended local law colleges and did not experience a liberal education amidst a cosmopolitan student community. So their minds are also closed.

The starting point to solving the problem should be to hand over charge of all universities to people who are closer in age to Gen Z and can relate a bit better to them than boomers. Gen Y people in their 30s maybe, or early 40s even. Plus also people from liberal urban backgrounds and preferably graduates of NLUs.

What a weird take to this horrible tragedy. How will a new admin prevent an accidental death like this? The kid was intoxicated and suffered a mishap and you're trying to politicise this instead of holding his peers accountable. They were there in the room with him. In a different state from where he studied.

GNLU's students have no decency and no manners. There were multiple people in that room and the police is investigating the case. 60-70% of them were intoxicated, next day the students were angry about the fact that they are not allowed to play the event. Zero sympathies for a fellow student who died.

But instead, the examination department of GNLU, known for its lack of consistent communication throughout the semester, has chosen to burden students with the stress of attendance forms and academic submissions at a time when they are barely holding themselves together.

For months, the administration failed to inform students about the crucial attendance mandates—something they had religiously done every Monday in previous semesters. Students, already juggling the pressures of mid-semester exams and continuous evaluation tests, were left in the dark about their attendance status. And now, after the death of a young student, instead of offering compassion and understanding, they are suddenly demanding that students submit attendance exemption forms. How can they ask this of students who are grappling with such immense sorrow? How can they demand forms, submissions, and exams when a fellow student is no longer alive, and the boys’ hostel is overwhelmed with grief?

The boys' hostel—Tushar's home—is not just a building with rooms. It is a place where bonds are formed, where students become family to one another. It is a home in every sense of the word. And now, in the wake of Tushar’s death, this home is drowning in sadness. Students are breaking down, crying uncontrollably, consumed by the weight of losing someone they saw every day. His roommate, a young man barely into adulthood, sat by my side the entire night, unable to stop the tears. How can anyone in such a state be expected to focus on exams, submissions, or even mundane tasks like filling out exemption forms?

Some students are trying to cope with their pain through graffiti and spray-painting, trying to express their anguish in the only way they know how. Others have retreated into themselves, weeping silently, unable to comprehend the loss. The sadness is palpable in every corner of the hostel. It is not just the loss of Tushar but the feeling of helplessness, the overwhelming realization that life has been cruelly snatched away from someone they considered a brother.

And what has GNLU’s response been? An impersonal condolence meeting, swiftly followed by demands for academic tasks. The very next day after Tushar’s death, first-year students were asked to submit research papers. This is not just insensitive—it is inhumane. How can the administration expect the batchmates of the deceased to carry on as though nothing has happened? How can they so quickly turn to the cold mechanics of academia when the hearts of their students are shattered?

In Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) last year, when a student died in a car accident, the university displayed empathy. Exams were canceled, academic duties were suspended, and students were sent home to be with their families, to heal, to grieve. They understood that in moments like these, no research paper or exam is more important than a human life. GNLU has failed to show this basic humanity. The administration did not even bother to send a professor or representative to Bhopal to check on the students who were stuck there, being questioned by police, scared and alone in a foreign city. They left them to fend for themselves.

Instead of stepping in to clarify the circumstances surrounding Tushar’s death, to ease the minds of students tormented by rumors of ragging or foul play, the administration has remained silent. This silence has only fueled the spread of misinformation, leaving students in a state of confusion and anger. It is the administration’s duty to provide clarity, to offer support, and to ensure that students are not further traumatized by the swirling rumors and speculations.

The lack of communication from the administration has not only caused distress but also deepened the wounds of the grieving students. And now, when they should be offering academic relief, extending deadlines, and prioritizing the mental well-being of students, GNLU has done the opposite. Attendance forms, research papers, group discussions—all of these continue as though Tushar’s death never happened, as though the students are expected to carry on without a pause. The administration’s actions—or rather, inaction—are a painful reminder that for them, academic schedules take precedence over human life.

The boys' hostel is a community in mourning. The students are not just grappling with the loss of a friend—they are grappling with the fragility of life itself. They need time to process, to come to terms with what has happened. Forcing them to continue with academic duties in the midst of this trauma is not only cruel but detrimental to their mental health. What they need now is not deadlines and submissions but time to heal. They need to be with their families, to be with people who love them, not trapped in a hostel that now feels like a tomb.

The university must understand that this is not just about academics. It is about humanity. The students need to be relieved from their academic duties, just as students were at RGNUL. They need time to grieve, to remember their friend, to find some semblance of peace in a world that has suddenly turned dark. GNLU’s administration must extend the deadlines, suspend exams, and offer the students the relief they so desperately need. Mental peace cannot be found in forms and submissions—it is found in understanding, compassion, and time.

This tragedy has shown us that GNLU is not just failing to run a university—▮▮▮. And in a time like this, that is the greatest failure of all.

No, I am a Law School alumnus and someone disgusted at the antics of GNLU students who are trying to 'profit' out of a batchmate's death. These are the reasons why most students from your university aren't really considered a class act regardless of their achievements. Please start doing better.

I was in that fest and people told me that the students of GNLU were trying to escape the investigation ( they booked their tickets on the same night of the unfortunate happening ). everyone in that room was giving different statement. I hope this is not true, but apparently, the people in that room brought him back up the stairs to the same room ( apparently, the police found blood stains there) and had the audacity to sleep in the same room with all those stains. when the police came they appeared like nothing happened. Also, apparently, the police were informed by the OCs, not the GNLU students. IDK, this is depressing, and I sincerely hope this is not true, but what is true is that this was no suicide. May god give strength to his family and may he rest in peace.
