The above news is a few months old, but I just realised now that DYC retires before the NUJS VC retires. Did anyone else spot this??? So is this a coincidence, or is the WB govt planning that the appointment of the new VC does NOT take place during DYC's tenure, given that:
- DYC could seek a merit-based nomination and remove the 10 year professorship requirement
- DYC could nominate a top-tier SC counsel to the search committee, or an academic he is friendly with, such as Sudhir Krishnaswamy. This could complicate matters because they could pitch for Gen X candidates in their 40s who are NLU alumni, have foreign degrees etc, as opposed to mediocre people from TLCs in their 60s.
In contrast, maybe Gawai will take a more hands-off approach and defer to the WB govt? Or am I reading too much into this and seeing conspiracies where none exists?
The other things to take note of are:
- The role of Dipankar Datta. He is currently the only Cal HC judge in the SC, because the Modi govt is delaying the appointment of a second judge. What role will he play? Will Gawai leave the task to him?
- The role of the Cal HC CJI. If he is nominated to the SC, will the govt step in when a powerless acting CJ is appointed? This is exactly what happened the last time.
- The role of Kishore Datta (and, by extension, his former senior and mentor TMC MP Kalyan Bandopadhyay) and Sanjay Basu of Aquilaw. Will one of them, or both, be on the selection committee? Datta was there the last time and took charge of the whole process. He had also appointed a TMC spokesman to the panel (a non-lawyer), who was removed after the SJA objected (Kian had covered this).
- The SJA had written petitions the last time. Will they do so again? One difference between then and now is that the TMC govt is a bit jittery after the RG Kar protests.

Fourthly, if the SC judges including the CJI were ever truly interested then VCs and their cabals wouldn't have been allowed to create fiefdoms, with/out state support. Everybody in the EC has always been complicit and it is unlikely to change unless the students are smart about their demands and enforcement.
I think DYC made his stance very clear by remaining silent on the convocation issue. Focus on the SC and HC judges in the EC. Why are they crooning with AG and other regime friendly members?
NAAC has already been "managed". That "success" will be shown to support extension of NKC till 2026. The other reason will be upcoming BCI affiliation renewal, construction works in the academic block and other housekeeping stuff.
But the real reason that NKC will be given extension is the long-planned construction in the sliver of land that NUJS got from KMDA. That project is valued at Rs 100 crores+ and we all know how cost overruns happen. This is the same project that PIB, SAK and AG desperately wanted okayed. But SJA completely derailed it.
There is a reason that NKC wanted SAK back. Dig deeper. Follow the money.
As the saying goes: follow the drugs, you get the dealer, follow the money and you never know how high it goes.
- The CJI will delegate it to a younger SC judge
- The younger SC judge will delegate it to his intern and say: “Just put my stamp on anyone the Bengal govt chooses. No objections from me as long as the nominee is a human and not an orangutan living in the forest.”
- NUJS gets a VC in the Bhat-Talukdar-NKC tradition, rather than the Menon-Chimni-MPS tradition.
Same thing almost happened to NLSIU, but the students went on strike and got Sudhir. The chances of a student strike at NUJS are nil.
Speaking for myself, I’d personally prefer an orangutan. They are very sweet, gentle and intelligent creatures. I can spend hours watching YouTube videos of them. You guys should also check out the recent Netflix documentary on orangutans.

Depends on who you ask. Large sections of Bengal will judge him based on what he does with the RG Kar case. Also what explains his complete inactivity after swooping in to take over the case wherein Justice AG complained in writing (in an order) against alleged strong-arm tactics of Justice SS? Interestingly, Justice SS and Justice AS have not refuted the claims of Justice AG.
Justice SS is a big supporter of NKC and the Regime. Also thick with KD and DD.
NKC isn't gone yet, he will be seeking an extension at least till he turns 70, like he did 6 months back. KD and KB don't see eye to eye anymore, though SB is in KD's fold, because of the connection that both of them share with the Nephew.
DYC appointing a good academic like Sudhir to the panel was not very likely to happen in any case, since DYC has demonstrably abandoned all his duties as a Chancellor towards the university ever since he assumed the CJI office. He goes to even inaugurate buildings in other law schools or to give lectures, but has never visited NUJS nor allowed for convocation to be held for the last 4 batches.
SJA is unlikely to raise any squawk this time. They have been thoroughly coopted by NKC, who will want one of his acolytes from the NE or IIT to assume office if his term doesn't get extended. That way, the successor can keep burying all the dirt just like NKC did about his predecessors.
The current Regi is an NKC man, but he will do whatever is asked of him by powers to be. The ex Regi who was 'sacked' once is trying to stage a comeback once again, by cosying up to senior faculty now.
The state government will keep vetoing any really capable person from holding the post. Faizu may try his luck, as will some of the current VCs elsewhere whose tenures are ending too.
The alum are completely useless in this matter as they never even tried to build a collective voice to help the university, unlike the NLS group.

According to KD's law, irrespective of a stay order from court, just because regime or regime-friendly folks have filed an appeal, that itself is a "stay order".
NLU Jabalpur is new and unlikely to move up the charts soon. So CNLU makes sense. Then again, CNLU was available even when MKS term at ILI was ending. Only MKS knows why he didn't go for CNLU or NLU Ranchi. For all we know MKS is probably moving to NLU Shimla or MNLU Aurangabad.
NKC would prefer to bring in The Couple because they are best placed to allow a Triad to run the gravy train. The state wouldn't mind. But Faizan is desperate to move out from CNLU. It was very embarrassing when he was denied another run at NALSAR and then spending some time in the woods before swallowing pride and agreeing at CNLU.
At the end of the day whoever is best placed to administer the spoils and be the FrontMan gets to run this Squid Game.
my money is on the couple
The scene in other NLUs isn't any different. Messiah is in a different game. All this is too pedestrian for him.
The Couple will be suitably accomodated in NUJS campuses in Asansol and Siliguri
