As a side note, as for the Calcutta High Court, I got to know that the Juniors over there would charge about Rs. 500 today per appearance, and when a few of them would ask for Rs. 850 (50 GMs - In Calcutta, fees are charged by Gold Mohurs where 1GM=17Rs)), the AOR would say "your senior would charge 10GMs (Rs. 170). So, the Junior Counsels, of say 1-2 years into practice, would earn about Rs. 500 per appearance, and say nothing (depending on their Senior) from their Chamber Senior. For someone with 3-4 or maybe 5 years of practice, I've heard they charge Rs. 2000-5000 per appearance. As for the AOR mentioning that the Seniors would charge Rs. 170 (10GMs) - that would be true, but 20 years ago when the Seniors were raw junior, which, accounting for inflation, would be Rs. 350-450ish today (I'd still argue that Rs. 170 then is worth more than Rs. 500 is today). I've also heard that since the Solicitors would primarily dominate the Original Side of the Cal HC, the Counsels would be dependent on them for briefs, and most of the Solicitors would not pay such Counsels. I am not sure if this is true or not, but I hope somebody sheds some light on this. [Mind you, this is mostly for the Original Side, not the Appellate - I have very little idea on how that would work, since I am assuming that the Advocate would be briefed directly by the Client there]
Enough on Cal HC, for Bombay HC, I've noticed that they have the same system as that of the Cal HC, with the Original Side being considered more glamorous, and the Counsels dependent on Solicitors for briefs. I would really love to know how much the Junior Advocates would be paid per appearance in Bombay, and if they are paid by their Chamber Seniors as well. Ditto on Drafting and Conference Fees.
