DYC has shared stage with CM during Cal HC events. And CM didn't have to hijack anything. VC owes his job to her acolytes.
And let's not deify DYC. We have enough deities and messengers of God already.
It is something else. Maybe DYC doesn't like VC and feels NUJS deserves better. But state wants NKC and his clones to continue. And there is little DYC can do when DD, SS and KD combine.
1. The SH controversy erupted only lately. He has been doing this throughout his tenure as CJI.
2 and 3. He has sat with the CM in this very year in public platforms in Kolkata itself. He even came to within 1 km of the university but chose not to visit it. He keeps visiting other universities on random occasions and shares stages with other controversial political figures. For crying out aloud, he invited Modi to his home for a puja!
1. The SH case: It will look very awkward if he sits next to the very man who students have written to him against.
2. The RG Kar case: There are protests happening in Kolkata every day and another massive protest is planned on Gandhi's birthday. It's too sensitive a time for him to visit. It will also look embarrassing if he sits with Mamata on stage at a time like this.
3. Mamata: She hijacked the platform that the VC gave her last time by making a political speech against Modi. I am sure DYC wants to avoid this from happening again.
Maybe the CJI is trying to signal something? And it is interesting that it is only now that alumni are writing to CJI when they are fully aware that he is retiring in Nov 2024 and there is very little time (thanks to Puja vacations) to organise the convocation. Many suspect that VC got some of his chosen to write (and publicise) the letter to CJI so that people stop asking talking about how VC is the reason why CJI has avoided Convocation in all these years.
Also the faculty member who alleged SH by VC may have gone to court in 2024 but the matter has been swirling in the EC since 2023 at least. VC is hoping that his appeal in Cal HC before a DB led by a regime friendly judge will succeed (and therefore his extension as well due in Nov). He already has NAAC and BCI certification excuses for DD and SS.
