So, your estimate is a bit off.
You walk into any apple repair facility, they will suggest a screen replacement directly... Which will cost you anything north of the above stated amount.
Now think hard... Do you remember buying any sort of product insurance with the MacBook...?

I am a law student and unfortunately my MacBook Air got damaged in the rains. The laptop is working fine but there’s considerable amount of water inside the screen- and I fear one day or the other the laptop will stop working.
I understand I have to go to the Apple Centre, but they’ll charge a lot of money and I am apprehensive to go to a third-party as well. Obviously can’t afford to shell out 14k-20k, which is what I think is the minimum.
Have tried a couple of home remedies but to no avail. Has this happened to anyone else? Will I need a complete screen replacement or will it just need a reset and cleaning and they can put the screen back?
