Also, I dare say, getting into a Jindal or Symbi is, at least at the moment, better than getting into a newer or lesser known "NLU".
So the lesson is that your contacts, communication skills and grooming can outweigh the repute of your university.
(Source: I am an alumni of this college and have a fair idea of how my some of my batchmates, seniors and juniors are doing. All top law firms across the country have equity partners from Symbi (Pune) and there are many other notable lawyers elsewhere, too. People are doing very well in the disputes area as well. )
Symbi (Pune), in my view, is somewhat like a foreign LL.M. -- it is exactly what you make of it. If you apply yourself, go the extra mile and perhaps be more of an initiative-taker across all the semesters, you will get an education that is quite good (in terms of the national legal education standards). The college has decent faculty and good infrastructure (library, etc.), which provide a pretty good platform for a sincere student. It also has groups which can be called the right crowd (good company really matters for young people who have just left their parents' homes), so if one wants he or she can make the right kind of friends, too.
The main drawback of this college is that it is not located in a major legal hub (Pune cannot match a Delhi NCR or Mumbai in opportunities / avenues for gaining exposure). The formal alumni network is also relatively weaker (to put it politely) but that also means that most people are keen to help a junior or an intern.
GPA is the only problematic thing in Symbi since it has some comparative kind of GPA, which keeps no room for two people at the same GPA / CGPA and people who knows about this system will be at the top of the game. Hearing this NLU v Symbi debate for more than a decade now. Nothing matters if your family have got money.
1. Fees are damn high, so already the economic cream of the society or those with affluent law backgrounds decides to pursue Law in here, barring a few exceptions which are here on loan or on the verge of taking one. So, not the best minds even apply to give SLAT.
2. CLAT/AILET/Jindal already takes away the best candidates from this "economic cream", so the competition gets lesser.
3. I have this feeling that all you need is luck in the first round of SLAT and somehow score. GK sections like CLAT can come from anywhere around the world, but the twist is there is no negative marking, so people end up betting on luck. Guess what? This applies to all the sections, and a person with a basic IQ, mathematical skills, legal knowledge, and luck can easily get 45+/60, which pretty much confirms the seat.
4. Then the most renowned part, "Personal Interview", is basically a strategy for the college and students to say, "Oh, we do not just choose on the basis of one exam, but we test overall aptitude". No way it is fair. Everyone gets a different set of faculties who have different mood swings during a certain time and can ask you anything. It is again luck as to what they ask if your answer is objectively correct, can subjectively make them satisfied, etc.
But well, it's still a big deal since it is considered the "2nd best Private University", and not everyone can make it to SLS Pune, and people have to resort to going to the smaller branches or drop the idea as a whole.
Also, who said Symbi couldn't match the feats of the Top 5 NLUs?? You all cannot beat us in having the worst management of all law colleges, high faculty attrition, having our LLM Alumni who are 5 year older than us teach us as their part-time job at sub-par salary, overburdening students with compulsory committee works while managing twenty internal assignments per semester and attending online lectures while having goddamn internships (Yes this time they had the audacity to give us around 10-12 internals in our only semester break LOL and we have our internal moot season next month). So yes let us debate which T1 NLU can beat us to this level of mismanagement.
