So the good news for India is that none of the competing bids will be from a sporting power. Yes, Indonesia ranks 30 places above but have fewer total medals — they too are underperformers.
If it’s between India and Indonesia, we should be able to pull it off because of Ambani money and being the bigger country.
Qatar is tricky because they can bribe their way just as they did with the football World Cup. To be fair, they also organised it well, whereas the CWG in Delhi was a disaster. Saudi Arabia can also bribe their way through.
Egypt has a good chance because the Olympics has never been held in Africa or a Muslim country. So two boxes ticked.
Overall, I do think India has a decent chance, because we aren't competing with Europe, the US, South America or Australia. And both Modi and the Ambanis have made it their dream project. I feel the bigger challenge will be internal. The opposition and their media houses will go all out to oppose Ahmedabad as a venue. The Western media will lap it up and push for Qatar or Saudi Arabia instead, which have influence in the Western media and think tanks.
So maybe Modi should choose a non-BJP state?
1. A girl from the Netherlands called India participated in the breaking competition. Indian media is desperately trying to link her to India and doing stories about her. Her parents are apparently from Suriname and she is dark skinned, so 300 years ago her ancestors were POSSIBLY Indian. THIS is literally the link they are using.
2. Neeraj Chopra spoke with Manu Bhaker and her mom for like 30 seconds. The whole media and Indian Twitter are claiming that it was to discuss a rishta. Now Manu's father has come out with a statement saying that it's rubbish and Manu is too young to get married.
3. An entitled wrestler gets legit disqualified after trying to pull off a gambit by participating in a lower weight category and failing. The Indian Opposition walks out of Parliament in protest, the Opposition offers her a Rajya Sabha seat, a state government gives Rs 4 crore (more than what bronze medalists have got) and she is hailed as a national hero. All because she happens to have protested against the ruling government and is from the politically influential Jat community.
So we don't care seriously about sports -- only cringe politics, stunts and gossip.
Cricket World Cup? Fine. Olympics? A BIG NO. In fact, even the Cricket World Cup was a shitshow, with a terrible pitch on offer in Ahmedabad.
