T1 law student BO 2025. Got a PPO and chupke se applied for Rhodes. What happens if I make it? Will I get blacklisted for foregoing the PPO? Will any action be taken? Has anyone with PPO made it.?

I think this may possibly be taking it a bit too far! A Magic Circle or Amlaw20 firm TC, while maybe not getting you the level of name recognition that a Rhodes would, is still an opportunity to make money; keep in mind that the transfer for Foreign law graduates to qualify in England and Wales anyway requires Indian law graduates to undertake about two years of study after their Indian LLB graduation before they can even start a TC. If you were to take up Rhodes, that two-year period would become four years (Rhodes requires two years' study in Oxford, plus two years pre-TC study). Frankly, if I were a student from a working class background confronted with this choice (quite an enviable choice to be confronted with!), I would go for the TC; you also have to remember that while Rhodes has huge meaning in India, it means hash in England (outside of very specific Oxford/academic circles). That would mean that if you postponed your TC until you finished Rhodes, many UK lawyers might (not necessarily saying would, but just might) consider you to be someone with fancy graduate degrees (caveat: but you would, as a Rhodes Scholar, likely have done the BCL, which everyone looks up to). In addition to the above, keep in mind that even if you did your graduate studies in Oxford, you'd never be able to call yourself an 'Oxford graduate' in England, something which that culture reserves only for those who did their undergraduate degrees in Oxford (just as Lallums (rightly) can't call themselves NLSIU alumni). Case in point: Sir Keir Starmer, the current PM, read for his LLB at Leads and the BCL at Oxford, but the sort of people for whom these things matter declaimed from the rooftops (upon his election victory) about the downfall of the Oxford-educated elite and the 'poshboys'.

Regarding T1 PPO in India, no dispute, nobody (the public, potential clients, the firm) gives tuppence if you give it up to go for the Rhodes; you would, in fact, be considered an idiot by many if you chose to do anything else!

While I don’t necessarily disagree with you, this isn’t fully true. There are scholars who have worked towards their SQE qualifications while working on their MPhil, thus saving them time and delay. Not to mention, all TCs require a two year training period, so the Rhodes only adds a “concern” if you wish to do both from the get go, in which case one knows that that is the deal one is taking. Rhodes is still miles ahead in prestige than a MC job, and certainly, you would be mistaken to think that MC firms don’t care for lawyers who are Rhodes Scholars. They very much do, often going out of their way somewhat to accommodate scholars by offering deferral and assistance.

I am glad to learn that I was partially wrong on this front. My understanding is that MC firms, while being impressed in theory by Rhodes, may not be so happy in practice. I didn't think about the SQE qualification-while-working-for-MPhil thing, but of course, that is definitely possible! In that case, there is no reason why one couldn't go for it while also taking up a Magic Circle offer.
