That's regrettable and unfortunate, but the fact is that the students brought it onto themselves as well. Let's look at some instances documented in the media:

- The infamous rape case

- The case where students were arrested by the Haryana police for distributing large quantities of drugs, including cocaine and heroin

- The disruptions by far-left students

The rape case was TEN years ago. You mean to say all this is an outcome of that? BS. The changes in policy that were to take place because of that, were implemented within 2014-15 itself on instructions of Dr. Sahni (who is not even at JGU anymore). This included not leaving classrooms unlocked after classes, making sure any student using any classroom has permission of faculty & security over email, flood lights in all the fields, patrolling of guards etc.

Surveillance is not the answer. The current admin fails to realise this. They've taken precipitative, dictatorial actions against students in the past (mostly because of hurt egos) which they had to roll back after protests from students and alumni. The fact of the matter is that the current officials in charge do not know how to administrate.

Yes, I agree with this comment. Get an OYO room or hotel! You want the college to keep classrooms open 24x7, with the AC running and electricity bill rising, just so you and your girlfriend can get a nice, comfortable make out space? Sorry, but the college shouldn’t do that and you should stop being so entitled!

There are in fact many students who do book private rooms with their girlfriends for privacy and you should do it too. There are now many nice hotels and OYO rooms nearby, catering to different budgets.

So this happened many years ago. What happened is that Jindal had a policy where classrooms would be kept open till 11 pm (and till 1 am during exam time) for students who wanted to study separately in a quiet space. Some classrooms were also designated as group study spaces. The students made an unofficial understanding between themselves that two classrooms on the top floor would be used exclusively as study spaces for couples. Naturally, it was understood that this may or may not include activities other than studying. The blinds of these classrooms, facing the corridor, would be closed to ensure complete privacy.

One day, Sahni had left something in his office and then drove back quite late at night to collect it. He happened to be passing by a make out classroom. For some reason, he opened the door and peeked inside. Let’s just say he didn’t like what he saw and the rest is history. 😅

Your comment made me recall an incident from 2014-15, when as a knee-jerk reaction, JGU admin decreed that all students, irrespective of course, school or seniority, require parental permission to step out of campus. There was an MBA student, in his early-thirties, arguing with the warden (Jogi, who was there for just a year) that he is married & a father himself - why is he being required to call his parents to step out?

This was unrelated; but anyway, I like how we refuse to acknowledge even twenty year olds as independent entities but only as an extension of their parents who ought to exercise their liberties only with parental permission.

(and let's not even talk about students coming from, for lack of a proper term, unstable homes or abusive parents)

How many stupid rules do you want the admin to make? And how much time should they waste? They have better work to do - actually resolving student issues. Instead of getting the admin to waste time on this shit, why not just do what many of the best universities in the world do? The a priori assumption behind their accounting systems is that the student is paying. If the parent pays, the record shows the account the payment came from (for refund or other questions), but also corresponds in such a way as to show that the student has paid, because the student (or whoever is paying on their behalf) is asked to supply a key piece of information which helps track the payment to that particular student's record. I would be very surprised indeed if Jindal (and frankly most unis in India) didn't do things in a similar way. But the way their thinking is different from the thinking of the type of unis I am talking about is that those unis don't treat students as children, they treat them as adults; if the student, whoever is paying on their behalf or their official scholarship sponsor doesn't pay by the deadline, it's the student who has to take the heat for it. Having been to an elite university abroad, I can tell you specifically that my institution's residential contract (and those of other institutions similar to my own) had a clause stating that they don't act in loco parentis - a clear sign that they don't waste their time by bothering about such things as students making out. Are you really telling me that you want the job of a university administration - some aspects of which academics may do - to include looking into this nonsense? You want them wasting their time looking into bank statements and things like that for something which isn't even criminal - students expressing their love for each other? Alright, look into that stuff for AML checks because you need to, but for daily things?

If you are so concerned about classrooms, alright, lock them up if you must (even universities abroad do that). In my view, a much more effective and ethical way than using cameras of persuading students not to use these spaces for lovemaking after hours is to explain that laws around occupiers' liability wouldn't apply to them, as they would be (i) either trespassers, as they had permission to be there for only a certain number of hours; or (ii) not using the infra for its intended purpose, meaning that if anything happened to them (somebody broke a kneecap falling downstairs or something), admin wouldn't take any responsibility.

Your way of thinking, if put into practical operation, would just result in a uni admin tilting at windmills.

This business of putting cameras in classrooms is very saddening. I am reading law at university in England. I happen to know that some unis there (Queen Mary comes to mind) are doing this to a limited extent, in order to evaluate how well office space is being used. This is a bad idea in the western context, and a bad idea in India as well. Raj's aim of building a Humboltian university in the western tradition is fantastic, but he must guard against copying them blindly.

The root cause of the problem is that girls are not allowed inside the boys hostel and vice versa. Hence, couples who are dating and need a safe space are forced to either seek privacy in deserted classrooms late at night (if such classrooms are accessible) or book a hotel or OYO room (which is fine per se, but expensive). We need to stop this stupid gender segregation of hostels once and for all. If universities abroad can do it, why can’t we? This is not some rowdy village college but an elite university with elite, liberal people. What’s the problem if we allow it?

You do know that the best universities of the world, which Jindal is doing a (very) poor job of imitating, have residence halls where both boys and girls live together in perfect harmony, without pressing rape charges every day?

You are just displaying your own ignorance levels and frightening lack of self-awareness! Or, even more worryingly, you are doing this because you are malicious. The law definitely doesn't protect only women (in fact, it has been proven time and time again that it does the opposite) and false accusations are very uncommon indeed; what we see more often is women making genuine claims which are dismissed as false, because we are in the unfortunate position of the selection process for who enters the legal profession not being strong enough to filter people like you, who are completely lacking in any moral backbone, out.
