IMO this single line by Justice Thommen sums up the issue:
"What the Constitution permits is the adoption of suitable and appropriate measures to correct the continuing evil effects of prior discrimination. Over-inclusiveness in such measures by unduly widening the net of reservation to unjustifiably protect the ill deserved at the expense of the others would result in invidious discrimination offending the Constitutional objective. "
This is precisely the problem that is happening now. ▮▮▮
So we really need to ask ourselves if the truly deserving receive reservation.
The other question is of merit. Is it justified to admit medical students, who will be conducting life-saving operations, with low marks in the entrance tests?
So we really need to go back to the dissent in the OG reservation case.
All social and moral factors aside, strictly speaking from a practical pov, is reservation in medicine (especially PG entrance) justified? Do you really want to have inclusivity and representation at the cost of danger to life and health? (Don’t even make the argument that INICET Rank 1 and Rank 10k, studying in the same branch at AIIMS are equally good doctors).
Also, before bashing me with your comments, please talk strictly wrt medicine domain.
Their performance as doctors will be equally good as they've also studied and passed the med school. If you rank the med school, I'm sure there'll be good number of sc st ews obc students ranking above those who got through general merit. Nevertheless, they all qualify the standard set by the educational institute to practise as a doctor as they pass all the subjects during their course of study.
Also, in medical profession, It's not only the brute merit but compassion and ethics that has huge impact on ailing population. Usually a person who has seen difficult situation during childhood including those from marginalised backgrounds would be willing to go to that extra edge in serving the downtrodden.

Its good btw that most of the caste are agitating to be categorised into OBC and they will be eventually. Apart from Brahmin everyone can be OBC and must be. So what you will see soon in coming 20-30 years is TN style OBV politics in India. Which is good , though SC dont really have a voice there.
Maybe Jitni Abaadi Utna Haq will be a silver lining in which all non brahmin can be categorised into OBC.
Only SC dont have ao called accrued privilege, and is given on account of oppression. Rest ST is area based, many brahmin and Rajputs come under ST.
OBC is meme category which will eventually lead us to lebanonization of india. Its good in a sense all these hindus chindus ekta ka natak kahtam hoga and we can the purely transact on caste basis.
No party can touch it thats why either take it to extreme that is demanded by landlord castes or subdivide by implementing classification on the basis of substantive justice and equality. Rohini commission in step in that direction.
