Beyond producing exemplary work, a law firm partner is expected to generate billable work for the firm. The more distinguished firms typically impose higher billing benchmarks. But that's only one facet of the story. The other involves the percentage of recovered billables a partner takes home through a combination of salary, profit share, and bonuses.
In some instances, individuals resign because the firm requests it; otherwise, they face termination for failing to meet billable targets. Others may choose to resign because they eschew the relentless pressure year after year, opting instead for the peace of mind that comes with more sustainable targets. Additionally, some leave for better remuneration, which hinges on two factors: the firm's confidence in providing sufficient work to this partner, thereby aiding them in meeting targets, and the partner's ability to generate enough work to render the compensation a tenable and profitable decision.
In the end, there is no such thing as a free lunch, certainly not in the realm of law firms.
