Nationalisation of NLUs is a long process and lot of adjustments has to made. As far as funding and investment for NLUs were done by respective state and they won't love to just give it off at one go without proper reimbursement. Every NLUs have their own bylaws which has to approached through legislative means. A directive from SC can be just a starting stone and can never be a single stroke over haul. And most importantly Central Government would have to keep their thoughts about it this.

Yeah no. As was said initially, if you are 1000% sure you want to do nothing except corp law firm job after graduating, don't go for NLUD - as many other NLUs like NUJS are top class in that respect. Ofc the implicit acknowledgment here is that NUJS gives you more opportunities in this sector.

Similarly, if you're 1000% sure that you want to go for UPSC etc and don't want to keep law firm jobs etc as plan B, sure you should go for some DU like college and not join any NLU at all as they are mad expensive.

You may believe that NLUD is behind placements from n number of clgs, but that's just anecdotal evidence. There are two sources of evidence that are reliable here: (1) the official/informal numbers of jobs from the pool of ppl who signed up for taking jobs and (2) what NLUD students themselves share with you. Rest everything is anyone's belief and they're happy to hold them close to their hearts. Unfortunately for them, that doesn't change the reality.

So what you said is that if people want to study judiciary or UPSC, people should get into DU for a fraction of the cost and avail everything that NLUD provides at a much higher cost. And as for the placement numbers, whatever spin you may give it, the scene is the same, NLUD is behind placements when compared to NLS, NALSAR, NUJS and these days, even NLUJ and GNLU.

CP - 45 mins.
Noida - 1-1.5 hr
Gurgaon - 40 mins (cab/bike/carpool) [it takes 1.5 hr from metro because currently there is no active direct metro line from dwarka to ggn and so you have to first go to CP and then take yellow line metro]

For a metro city these numbers are very convenient. I mean ask someone who is interning in bombay lmao.

if im saving 20k on food and room rent per month for each of the 4 internship slots in a year, I am very happy to travel 40-45mins by AC metro to CP.

not to mention, it is convenient to travel to many UPSC and judiciary coaching centres and so many of us join for offline classes at these coachings even during an ongoing semester.

in absolute numbers? maybe not (reasons below). in terms of material opportunities it provides? probably better than everyone else.

again, the point is simple: the crowd at NLUD is vastly different than other top NLUs. People here are those who have specifically left supposedly better NLUs like NLS only because they wanted to stay in Delhi to prepare for competitive exams like UPSC, Judiciary etc. If you don't agree with this premise, well, that's up to you. As a student here, I am well aware about my batch dynamics. Lol if you have 40 people in a batch of 120 students preparing for UPSC, you cannot compare the absolute numbers in terms of campus recruitments with NLUs which are specifically opted for due to their corporate foothold.

"People can intern in any city during vacations without having to stay in a hostel" Sure, if everybody can afford those kinds of expenses for internships which are more often than not unpaid. Room rent would come around 10k to 20k in Delhi, then Food & travel expenses. Surely, we live in a world where everybody can afford to spend 20-30k for a 4-week unpaid internship. Imagine spending that kind of money for each of the 4 internship slots every year lmao.

Again, the range of career opportunities that were mentioned are present at NLUD to a better extent than any other NLU specifically due to the college culture, history, and location.

95% of people who seriously consider taking a job, get a job by the end of their 5 years at NLUD. Even when we had arguably the worst campus recruitments in the recent years, 40+ students from a pool (by pool i mean students who signed up for placements indicating that they are interested in taking jobs) of about 50 students (total batch size was 80) have jobs. in my worldview that is not a bad number for what have been termed as the worst numbers NLUD has seen in the recent times.

Please understand: unless there is NLU nationalisation, these problems will continue across all colleges. We urgently need together and petition the government or Supreme Court. A case on this issue is already pending in the Supreme Court, so NLU students can get together and file an intervention petition.

it is not to mention a locational disadvantage, it is a factor that leads to less placements. people in nlud prefer to stay in delhi and intern because they can avail the hostel and mess facilities which saves you a good 20k a month (at least) when compared to interning in Mumbai. sure, there may be other factors influencing why nlud produces less placements, but the delhi job market is extremely saturated and the students in nlud and others clc, ggsipu, amity, slsn etc need to realise it. for someone in nluj or gnlu, they have less incentive to stay in delhi than nlud students because they will be paying similar figures in either place as a cost of interning.

people used to pick nlud largely because of the oft cited locational advantage- one of which is the presumption that u can intern in firms in delhi and get a placement but that has been largely challenged now.

not directly on the point but what must not be forgotten here is that either way, the stipend offered by the firms is so dismal, that it very much excludes a lot of people from availing opportunities that these firms offer. interning in Mumbai is extremely expensive, and someone who in not that well-off can barely afford it. sure, there are stories of hustle culture where u live terribly for a month while interning but this must not be normalised. students should be compensated fairly for these opportunities, and firms must be more accountable for this.

The main problem with NLUD is the professors they have

In the meanwhile colleges like NUJS, NLUJ know that their students wont get jobs if they donot intern aggressively, so that is what they do and the student bodies are able to keep the teachers in check and don't let them ruin their internship opportunities

By this logic all NLUs should only be in bom. If delhi is a locational disadvantage, then NLIU RGNUL HNLU RML etc should close shop, and MNLU M should have been the next NLS by now. Nobody’s stopping you from interning in Bom - it’s common knowledge that most corp firms in delhi rarely hire. Brilliancy should also entail the common sense to apply to a location which gives you the maximum chance of hiring.

And let’s be honest, poor placement rates are (a) because they simply don’t have the sort of alumni base and corp connects that older NLUs have (b) the sort of market this year.

I think a point which nobody has noticed but I feel leads to less numbers of jobs from NLUD is Delhi. We all over estimated hiring needs of Delhi as a city. Always Mumbai has more ppo and fresher joining than Delhi, maybe even 2-4x of Delhi. And most NLU D students naturally choose to intern in Delhi. Therefore I have seen brilliant friends from NLUD on callbacks and assessments but simply not being offered anything. Same people at other places would have had jobs. Wouldn’t be too surprised if only in placement metric, MNLU M equals or betters Delhi in next 7-10 years. Not because NLUD is bad, but because Del as a city has finite chances to be capped and the legal fraternity still doesn’t recognise it. NLUD students should I feel must try and intern in Bangalore or Mumbai for better chances. Agree or disagree guys?

NLUD placements have never been at par with the places that you mentioned. Moreover, people can intern in any city during vacations without having to stay in a hostel. The range of career opportunities that you mentioned are available from any top NLU, so stop pretending that NLUD has got some exclusive claim over it.

Placements at NLUD are at par with other T1 NLUs like NLS, NALSAR, NUJS. If you want to go for corporate jobs - you'll have all the opportunities to go for it.

But the biggest advantage of NLUD over any other NLU comes due to the locational advantage and the accompanying benefits that advantage comes with.

See, if you're 1000% sure that you don't want to do anything else in your life other than corporate law firm job, you should probably go for NUJS, NLUJ etc. That's all that there is in those NLUs.

But if you want to keep your options open - be it litigation, academia, UPSC, Judiciary, CAT, higher studies, Politics, etc - the best place for you will be NLUD. Not even NLS can provide you with such a pool of open options.

Remember, even for corporate law firm jobs, you need to intern a lot. NLUD provides you with its full campus space even during vacations so that you can comfortably intern in Delhi/Noida/Gurugram. The metro station is 200 metres from our back gate. (Not to mention, we've an entire market, liquor store, Vegas Mall, and a PVR at the exact same distance of 200 metres).

Because of its location, you can easily pursue UPSC, Judiciary, CAT coaching if you want to. You can easily intern with a firm or chambers all months of the year (post class model). You anyways get 4 internship slots in a year. Add to that your post class months and you can pretty much equip yourself with the best experiences possible.

We've had Rhodes Scholars from NLUD over the years, even last year's. We've had people clearing Upsc and judiciary every single year. We've had a student who became an MP. We've had people joining foreign law firms. Our exchange program abroad is strong.

TLDR; if you want to keep your options open while at the same time securing a corporate law firm job, go for NLUD. If you're 1000% sure that you'll only do a corp law firm job and nothing else, go for other NLUs.

See the thing is at every T1 NLU you need to be in the top 10% of the batch to have a shot at a good T1 firm. With the way the market is right now, idk what the scene will be in the next 5 years when you sit for placements, you really need to work hard to get a T1 job. At NLUD, if you look at the absolute figures it might be a bit upsetting but if you see it in context of 17-18 T1 placements out of a pool of 40 ish serious students, the figure is pretty good imo. Merely getting into any T1 NLU will not be a guarantee of a good job and aspirants need to accept that and not fall into the rosy picture painted by coaching institutes. College aate hi thali pe naukri nahi milegi.

Also at your stage, just generally I would seriously urge you to not go with a closed mind that corporate job is the only thing ever. Trust me there are things you dont know you dont know. Go with an open mind and try to explore everything you can get your hands on in whichever uni you end up in.

If you do a statistical analysis of the placement records over the last 5 years, you'll come to the conclusion that even GNLU gets more Tier 1 hirings than NLUD. If getting a well-paying corporate job is your SOLE criteria, then with NLIU's recent struggles with placements, I would place NLUD above NLIU, but lower than the other top CLAT options for sure.

Depends on how much you are willing to work. It will provide you with opportunities and good exposure. Even last year when the placements were "bad", 41 students out of a pool of 55 students got placed, out of which 25-26 were tier 1 firm jobs. So anywhere you go you will have the opportunities it will just depend on how much work you are willing to put to get a good job

I have been reading stuff about Nlud placements here. All I want to ask is, is that really true? Is nlud really not providing good placements to it's students? What's is the real situation?

I plan to go in corporate only (1st gen T_T ), might consider academia but not really sure about that rn.
