Of course, life must have been terrible without the internet and smartphones, but competition and academic pressure were also less, there was less material to study etc. So more free time to do masti and less stress.

So just wondering if they had more fun?

Speaking for myself - No, I am first generation graduate from T-1 university.
Watch the show 'Taj Mahal 1989' and you will know. What a beautiful world without this torturous competition for corporate mazdoori that actually pays little compared to the cost of living
I am sorry sir, but that does not sound like a nice time at all. There is no way you seriously mean that life was better without mobile phones and the internet. And writing projects BY HAND??? Without a computer??? πŸ˜³πŸ€―πŸ˜¨πŸ™€ It sounds like a horrible era, if you ask me.
The answer to OP is our parents did NOT have more fun, they only had less competition. They grew up in an ultra-conservative, ultra-patriarchal and technologically backward society. That's not a recipe for fun.
