Top colleges help you build contacts and gain immense exposure e.g. many tlc kids won't even know what Rhodes is while an NLS kids might start planning his cv for it from 2nd year itself due to awareness and support from seniors.
If you manage to beat their advantage then the college name doesn't matter for any scholarship.
1. Identify if you want to specialize or want a general LLM.. If you want to specialize, find colleges good for that. 2 friends went to Graduate Institute, Geneva because they wanted to specialize in certain subjects.
2. Keep your extra curricular strong. Person who got Rhodes from my class had good debating etc.
3. Look at previous year SoPs and see what they did. And how they expressed themselves.
4. If applying to Germany, you get bonus points if you learn German beforehand. I remember one of the DAAD committee member specifying how a candidate who learnt German through duolingo impressed the committee.
