I think you are right, my friends in Assam told me that Prof. VK was liked by them, it was only a faction of students which started a narrative due to their personal agenda. She told that he was solely responsible for campus development because before that their campus construction was almost at a stop also about faculties, the permanent recruitment was done during his tenure. I don't know exactly but I did not hear bad about Prof. VK from the students there.

Don't know about Other NLUs but Assam protest was initiated by some students with personal agendas, the demand for faculty and Campus was already being looked into by the VC and most of the demands were fulfilled within few weeks time. Prof. VK, had it under control and given the previous VCs NLU Assam had, I think the quality of facilities NLU Assam presently has is because of VK sir's initiatives and vision otherwise we would not have had a complete campus by 2017-2018 and increase in student activities. I don't think any NLU in its initial stages provided students with funds to go to international competitions and even conferences. It would not be correct to say that NLU Assam protest led to the then VC moving to Nagpur.

It's important to note that the protest at NLU Assam was not directed at Prof. Vijender Kumar. Students liked him as he helped and provided money to students for participating in international competitions, and formalized sports and cultural fest, moot court competitions, while being very student-friendly.

I am. During my time, we did not need to hide anything for the institution's reputation because its good name was based on facts and prevailing good practices. I would rather the University fixes itself than expect others to protect its reputation by brushing its incompetence under the carpet.

This new vc is an embarrassment to my alma mater and he is destroying nalsar's brand value. Faizan Mustafa is sorely missed.

NALSAR is an interesting place when it comes to activism. There's a noticeable trend of selective empathy that can be pretty frustrating. For example, students will loudly champion dog rights, but then line up for beef at the Telugu fest without a second thought. They'll set up rat traps and kill mice in gruesome ways, but then get all worked up about getting rid of the monkeys on campus while cooing over how cute the cats are.

In the mess hall, it's a similar story. The menu is packed with non-vegetarian options like goat, lamb, chicken, and fish almost every day of the week. This heavy presence of meat doesn't seem to bother the same students who are vocally against animal cruelty in other contexts.

This selective activism seems to be a reflection of the dominant woke liberal ideology at NALSAR. While this ideology promotes social justice and equality, it often comes with its own set of contradictions, especially regarding animal rights. The selective compassion these students show likely mirrors broader societal tendencies to prioritize certain issues based on cultural and ideological leanings.

Personally, I find this kind of selective animal welfare activism pretty troubling. I believe all animals deserve the same level of care and respect, whether they're dogs, cats, or any other creature. The selective empathy on display at NALSAR highlights a bigger problem within modern activist movements: the tendency to let cultural and ideological biases dictate which causes to champion, rather than adopting a consistent, universal approach to treating all animals ethically. The real challenge is to encourage a more comprehensive and inclusive view of animal rights, one that goes beyond these selective concerns and embraces compassion for all animals equally.

The hypocrisy of NLU students knows no bounds. When it comes to dogs, they will go all out to defend them, even if they are vicious and but people. When it comes to monkeys, they will do every thing to vilify them.

Monkeys and not as harmful as dogs, because they just want food. They don’t want to attack you. But dogs randomly attack people.

Do you stay on this campus, have you been chased and attacked by hordes of angry chattering monkeys? Have they pried open the nets of your room to get into your food when you’re asleep? Have you been stuck in your room or in the washroom because the monkeys are outside toppling “monkey-proof” dustbins and baring their teeth at you? Have you been late to classes because the monkeys are blocking your path? If the answer is no then kindly shut the fuck up.

As soon as KDR joined NALSAR, many good faculty has been poached by NLSIU. As recently as previous semester, we lost our constitutional law instructor Prof. Chauhan. What is worrying to the university is KDR doesn't persuade the outgoing good faculty to stay. He is not focussed on retention. Because of loss of good faculty, administrative roles in university are given to faculty ▮▮▮ . Demos were conducted deliberately online 5 days ahead of reopening of semester. Students' feedback were not considered. ▮▮▮

KDR has to rein on the incompetent old faculty involved in political mastery creating toxic environment for young faculty and preventing promotion of new and competent ones. He has to recruit steadily but must maintain the quality and involve good internal faculty in administrative decisions like senior Prof. Dhandha, Prof. Kannan, Prof. Murali, among others. He relies on his old chaps who doesn't care about the institutional growth. To attract good faculty at par with how Sudhir in NLSIU is recruiting he also has to build infrastructure, but he failed. He can't even re-build/renovate the library which has cramped space, let alone building new hostels, recreational area.

NALSAR has lost its glory that it achieved since it's inception till Prof. Mustafa's tenure. KDR will keep entertaining judges (seemingly those who are in line to be CJI), to keep gaining judicial patronage, that's the best he is doing till now. Hats off to his own junior, Sudhir Krishnaswamy, who re-built NLSIU with the best faculty.

These will not do if the powers that be want SKDR to continue. Note that Tau is very much around and the great benefactor is back in MHA. Also note that SKDR has witnessed, survived and thrived such "storms" earlier.

Why just NLUD? Why not check his record at NLUO? I remember Legally India doing a story of how SKDR did a cut-paste job at NLUO for the NAAC accreditation.

Have a plan B. If you are successful in evicting SKDR be ready for a clone or worse whatever the dressing - NLU/TLC alumni. Although almost all NLUs practically run on student fees, we are unlikely to be given a meaningful say in who actually gets appointed as VC and the everyday administration of univ, including faculty recruitment, which is basically a traffic of IoUs, favours and other "exchanges".

In recent years, VC evictions were successful only (I am specifically not getting into their replacements) when the VCs committed harakiri and/or students were able to access damning info that made the VC political and/or judicial liability.

Examples:

1. CNLU Patna - Students had enough of their evergreen VC. But he sought to preserve his influence and corrupt practices through a proxy. But PIB had become liability and CNLU students created enough noise for the political-judicial establishment to drop him. Ofc the "Empire" struck back.

2. WBNUJS - Although the TMC/state govt is the fav punching bag, PIB survived and thrived due to support from a powerful section of judiciary. These folks are apolitical in the sense that they are valued by all the rival politicos. But that's another story. Point is that the SJA despite damning inquiry reports could not stop EC from giving PIB an unanimous second term in 2016. But in 2018, the SJA had understood the game. The political-judicial establishment always needs a good driver for the gravy train. But when the gravy train faces real danger of derailment, the driver is expendable. Ofc, the SJA in 2019-20 lost the plot and therefore suffering the consequences.

3. NLIU and HNLU - Both had it coming for a long time. Students finally came together and cashed in on the harakiri committed by the VCs who had grown complacent.

4. RGNUL - Students were able to pile pressure but the crafty PJ found crucial support in your dear FM (then) and an extremely accommodating judiciary. PJ was stirred but not shaken. PJ knew his time was up, made a move to Sonipat and Tau had students for lunch subsequently.

5. NLU Assam - Teachers and students wanted VK gone but they had to wait till Tau made arrangements in MNLU Nagpur. But another VC (from Karnataka and a bhakt) lost his grip only after he "allegedly" flashed repeatedly leading to some sort of police complaint (which ended somewhere in a landfill) and the VC was given time and opportunity to resign and enjoy terminal benefits.

You should also consider the recent examples of failed "uprisings" in MNLU Nagpur, NLU Ranchi (even the earlier protests), NLUO (when the VC is a dear friend of well-respected CJ), NLU Vizag, HPNLU, NLUJ et al.

Lastly, do not get voluntarily hijacked and self-invite a smack down like SJA of WBNUJS.

The anonymity here stems from a lack of response from the administration and the understandable fear of reprisal for exercising freedom of speech. We arrived at NALSAR with high hopes, drawn by the esteemed 'NALSAR' brand. We anticipated exceptional professors, and while there are indeed some outstanding ones, it's disheartening to witness the departure of many esteemed faculty members.

Our initial enthusiasm soon gave way to disappointment as we faced the reality that some core law subjects, such as contract law and family law, were being taught by professors specializing in criminal law. This not only creates discrepancies in our learning opportunities but also undermines NALSAR's reputation and our future prospects. We aren't demanding extraordinary quality; rather, we seek the basic standard of being taught by professors specializing in their respective subjects, with transparent appointment processes.

This situation is unjust not only to us but also to the professors themselves, as evidenced by their evident disappointment, as reflected in recent communications. As we contemplate the remainder of our four years here and consider the welfare of future batches, it's concerning to witness our senior peers already apprehensive about their upcoming years due to the departure of esteemed faculty members.

Moreover, the decision to conduct today’s demo classes online, when the university is set to reopen in a week, seems perplexing. Offline classes could potentially attract more participants, yet this opportunity appears overlooked.

In light of these concerns, we, as students, express our disappointment and urge the administration to respond. We advocate for being taught by subject-specialist professors appointed transparently, with student feedback mechanisms in place to ensure quality education and accountability.

Guys, unless you go on a proper protest and get media attention, nothing will happen. Go back many years ago and ask your super seniors how they got Veer Singh removed as NALSAR VC. Kian was the catalyst in those days. Now you can go to so many online news portals, which didn’t exist at the time, such as the Wire and Print.

@NUJS SJA and student bodies of other NLUs: If you're reading this, then these are the sort of common issues plaguing the NLUs on which students across law schools should unite and display solidarity in combined protests.

Prof. Rao,

We trust this email conveys the gravity of our concerns. Your administration has, regrettably, earned a reputation

for silence, lack of accountability, and inaction. We have refrained from writing this for a long time, hoping for

positive changes or decisions from your end. However, we now write with utter dismay over the sheer lack of

prudence from your side.

To the Vice-Chancellor and the administration at the helm: You have successfully steered the college towards

obscurity. We have had esteemed vice-chancellors, registrars, and some of the brightest scholars in the country,

building and maintaining the 'NALSAR' brand. Thank you for demonstrating that with an administration as

thoughtless as yours, even the NALSAR brand cannot retain, let alone attract, quality.

Currently, we have only four active professors. Among them, Prof. Rao and the Registrar do not teach a single

mandatory course. One is Prof. Balakista Reddy, who is on lien, leaving only Prof. Vasanthi actively teaching. We

have fewer than five associate professors who are overdue for promotions and are overworked. The recruitment

process conducted last year was deficient, as professors essential for mandatory courses were not recruited, and

student feedback was not considered.

Despite promises of faculty recruitment, you have failed seismically at retaining faculty and institute builders.

NALSAR has lost more than ten professors, including renowned ones, due to your aimless administration

.Whenever the topic of recruitment arises, you proudly declare the recruitment of two experienced Telugu

professors who served as vice-chancellors at other NLUs. They seem to treat NALSAR as their retirement home,

teaching fewer than ten hours per semester.

Regarding faculty allocation, why are professors specializing in criminal justice and international law teaching

family law? Professors specializing in constitutional law are teaching labor law, and those specializing in taxation

and international trade law are teaching evidence, contracts, and property law. Professors specializing in civil

procedure and legal methods are not allotted their subjects.

Why was Professor Ashwini not assigned to teach CPC? Both teachers who instructed the DPC Clinic have been

reassigned to teach CPC. Hasn't Professor Kannan expressed his displeasure at having to teach two mandatory

courses in one semester at his age? We do not have any details regarding those giving demo classes for

Constitutional Law tomorrow. Meanwhile, other national law schools have well-known professors who have been

poached from our college. Is there any rationale behind these allocations? Fourth and third years have been allotted

a single professor to teach subjects like ethics, evidence and constitutional law for batches exceeding 150 students.

Your tenure, now nearing its two-year mark, has little to show except for the valiant attempts to cover up public

humiliations such as workers' exploitation, the girls' protest incident, and the faculty gate. Your actions and

inactions have consistently exacerbated each situation. During the latter incident, you failed to meet with Prof.

Manohar, necessitating the proctorial board to take suo motu action. This clearly illustrates your inability to

effectively address either student concerns or faculty issues. Your regime is marked by the mistreatment of faculty,

students, and the workers who sustain this institution. Faculty are denied basic respect, agency, recognition, and

promotions, while student considerations, even pertinent ones, are swiftly dismissed. Workers and non-teaching

staff are denied basic human dignity. On how many accounts does this denote failure? Your actions and inactions

have only worsened each situation.

The Registrar excels in whataboutery, causing nothing but problems for the student body. Everything is blamed on

the student body. The Student Bar Council must beg for any action or permission, often rejected or denied without

rationale, except spite. Instead, we are subjected to sermons on student conduct and lack of achievements. Is the

Registrar so occupied with her sermons that she cannot teach a single mandatory course? How can anyone thrive in

an environment with zero institutional support? Every reimbursement is blocked, and even reasonable

expenditures to address student concerns, such as the monkey problem, are deflected. Student intake has increased, random courses like the IBL program are started without gauging campus space

organization, yet scholarship amounts steadily decrease every academic year. Where is this money being funneled

if we lack funds for scholarships? Is it being misappropriated or funding the IPR conference that happens every

week? The academic regulations stipulate an annual fee increase of ₹5,000, yet it was increased by ₹10,000 this year.

On what basis? The services remain haphazard and subpar.

Numerous safety concerns have surfaced, with no action from you. There are also several other opaque and

imprudent decisions you have made. Promises of hostel construction and a new campus are constantly thrown

around, but we see no progress. You have failed to procure land and refuse to address the space crunch our college

suffers from. You have been abysmal in securing anything from both the past and current governments. Your

greatest achievement is securing a meager ₹75 lakhs to open a research center, triumphantly publicized. How

does this fare against NLSIU, where Sudhir secured ₹45 crores and ₹12 crores from JSW Group and Luthra for

renaming two of their academic blocks?

We eagerly await your response (if any) to these pressing issues, which we doubt you will address. Your collective

indifference and apathy have only simmered discontent among us. If there is no change in your approach or if we

do not receive satisfactory responses to these issues, we will not hesitate to stage a protest when the first-year

admits and their parents, especially your favorites—the parents of foreign nationals—visit the campus on joining

day.
