The National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) in Ranchi has been grappling with a series of alarming issues that demand immediate attention. Recent reports of cockroaches and dead birds found in the campus water coolers have raised serious health and safety concerns. This, coupled with a growing discontent among students about academic pressures and unfair treatment, paints a troubling picture of life at one of India's premier law schools.
Health Hazards: Contaminated Water Supply
The discovery of cockroaches and dead birds in the water coolers is not just an unfortunate accident; it is a grave health hazard. Access to clean drinking water is a basic necessity, and the fact that students are forced to consume contaminated water is unacceptable. This negligence points to a failure in maintenance and oversight, which can lead to severe health repercussions such as gastrointestinal infections and other diseases.
The Academic Struggle: Unfair Targeting and Low Marks
Beyond the physical health concerns, students at NUSRL, Ranchi are also facing significant mental and emotional stress. Many have reported being unnecessarily targeted and humiliated by teachers. This form of mistreatment is not only detrimental to their mental well-being but also creates a hostile learning environment.
Moreover, there are widespread complaints about the marking system. Students have observed an unusual pattern of low average marks being awarded, which raises questions about the fairness and transparency of the evaluation process. Low grades can severely impact students' future opportunities, from internships to job placements, and further studies.
The Impact on Student Morale
These issues collectively contribute to a decline in student morale. When students are subjected to unfair treatment and face basic health risks on campus, it is no surprise that their motivation and academic performance suffer. The stress and anxiety caused by such an environment can have long-lasting effects on their mental health and professional aspirations.
But do note that this is a problem that persisted before the new VC-it has nothing to do with the actions of the VC. The new VC has brought no changes regarding the marking scheme or the testing scheme. Rather, batches that have seen mass failing (40+ students in multiple subjects) are trying to find avenues to clear papers.
There are some profs who do expect rigour from their students. And I am with them when they do fail students. But there are a few who are not even competent to teach their own papers (case in point: family law paper). When those profs wantonly fail students, these failing students get a chance to raise questions at the marking schemes of all the professors (regardless good or bad).
There is no gripe with the VC regarding this. He is just the authority listening to people cry.
