It is extremely difficult to get a break at these places even for Tier 1 law school grads. In-house isn’t a piece of cake, seriously.

Well as far as I can guess they are of no use now, to the concerned person.
Do you actually think that getting internship without reference is an achievement ? With or without reference, both are equivalent. Sometimes reference can be beneficial. Drop that sense of achievement kid and be practical.
You probably should apply for In-House counsel jobs instead for law firms. The latter provides better career stability, good amount of salary and can even be complimented with a MBA, if you wish to pursue such a degree in the future.
