it is compulsory- but not every law school actually allots considerable resources to the subject and many subsume jurisprudence in other courses. I went to nalsar- I wouldnt have read concept of law or lon fuller or dworkin if I hadnt taken elective courses offered by Sidharth chauhan. I think its fair to say most law schools do a very poor job in teaching jurisprudence.NLS is the exception because they have many people on staff capable of teaching it.

Hi LI Hivemind. I am an Indian student at law school in a foreign jurisdiction. I was recently debating with a friend of mine in my law school about the value of studying legal theory. Wanted to ask two questions out of curiosity.

First, is this subject compulsory in Indian law schools (be they NLU, TLC or whatever)?

Second, if and where it is compulsory, is it compulsory because the law schools think that that is a good idea or because the BCI requires that law students in India study legal philosophy?

NB: Promise there's no trolling here. I (1) study in a jurisdiction where the regulator doesn't think that it is a good idea to make it compulsory to study Jurisprudence (but I think they should change their mind), so no superiority complexes/desire to show off; (2) love Jurisprudence, for I am fortunate enough to study in a law school with good Jurisprudence faculty; and (3) study in a law school where, despite the regulator's indifference, Jurisprudence is compulsory. Considering this, my plea to mods is to publish this and not assume that I am engaged in some kind of hit-job.
