I grew up watching Shark Tank. Being exposed to such amazing discussions at a young age, I was naturally interested in the startup space. So when I applied for a role in private equity, I thought the lawyers working in PE would also be excited about Startups and Shark Tank.

I couldn’t be more wrong.

You’d think, considering we get the opportunity to work with forward thinking founders, we’d discuss some updates about Startups. Turns out some of my seniors have never watched Shark Tank.

During break, people just talk about normal stuff like where they went to eat, or where their batchmates are currently working. Maybe a passing reference to startups because someone they know works there.

Sure, during work hours, we might discuss about finalising the SPA to send to the investor. But outside work, there is almost no discussion about their business model or the vision the startup founders have.

Is this the same with lawyers in all other PE teams, or am I missing something?
