Another incident of sexual harassment at a law university, this time it is not a student but A FACULTY.
Imagine the audacity of preparators to sexually harass a faculty on campus. Why was she not supported by students and admins? Why was this not reported? She had to leave the campus and take lectures only due to the trauma caused. How long will rich affluent kids perpetrate crimes and get away with it? Is this the new law.

This is terrible! And see the conduct of the Jindal PR team. Normally they would flock to any post mentioning them on social media, but here despite being tagged, people who pose as faculty but in reality do only PR for the place haven't even expressed basic concern despite having been tagged in that post. Apart from this horrible incident, it is also shocking to find out that faculty in Jindal are being forced to teach electives that they have got no inclination to teach. Then what's the use of hiring people en masse at high salaries? This place is just a can of worms. People who value their jobs can't speak out and hence very few of these issues ever get discussed out in the open.

If you see Sonali's linkedin it says that she has specialized in subjects such as gender and human rights during her LLM and also during her professional career. Why can't she be allotted this subject then? I don't see any reason. Why is she shying away from teaching the same subject which she specialized in?

What happened to the former faculty member is completely disheartening. However, there are limitations on Anti-Sexual Harassment Committees like the COGSASH at JGU. It appears that not all the facts about the incident have been released, including what evidence (if any) was provided to the COGSASH. The faculty could have also resorted to reporting the students using the F.I.R. mechanisms before the police (a police chowki is literally outside and adjacent JGU's entrance gate). While there is no doubt that resorting to criminal procedure takes its toll on the individual and their family, this case would have been appropriate to be brought before the police because it is a harassment that purely took place at work and unlike a female student, a female faculty particularly one with strong legal background and can be expected to stand for themselves and unlike students, be supported by colleagues and family. There are various colleagues at JGLS and also other lawyer colleagues at other JGU Schools (e.g., JGBS, JSGP, JSES and JSPH) who specialise in legal aid and sexual harassment cases, and would have certainly extended a helping hand pro-bono with the criminal processes. All of this is not meant to gaslight or victim-blame the faculty concerned, but as the saying goes: "God helps those, who help themselves". If faculty themselves do not stand against injustices being committed against them, then neither other colleagues nor students would feel confident in bringing perpetrators to justice. Not only do those molestors deserve to be "name and shamed" (which would have been harder absent any FIR/criminal complaint), they deserve to be tried and convicted should the allegations be established.

Furthermore, while one can extend empathy over discomfort in teaching certain topics, law is one field where BCI/UGC mandate that certain courses be taught notwithstanding student and faculty discomfort. If the Gender & Society argument is accepted, then students may go with an understanding that prostitutes are to be blamed for prostitution and not sex traffickers or pimps ; children and parents are to be blamed for child sex abuse instead of offenders ; and women are to blame for their conduct, than a rapist. This slippery slope can be extended to other courses: there was a senior faculty at JGLS who once declined to teach S. 375 and sexual offences module in IPC (Law of Crimes) classes and was educated about his obligation to teach it, notwithstanding his discomfort (discomfort comes with being a lawyer) ; a faculty teaching Company Law needs to go through deaths of whistleblowers and corporate frauds ; a faculty teaching Constitutional Law and Administrative Law needs to teach excesses during Indira Gandhi's emergency regime, including brutal deaths of political opponents. Most faculty at lower ranks do not get to choose what they want to teach: be it Jindal, be it NLSIU Bangalore, be it NUJS Kolkata ; or be it Delhi University etc. A Science Teacher in school has to teach simple anatomy and biological processes to a Class VIII-Class XII student in school, they cannot cite discomfort or disgust and not teach students about concepts like sexual intercourse, periods, primary and secondary sex organs, STIs, HIV AIDS etc.

That’s a longwinded way of saying you’re in the admin and have lost your humanity.

She’s just supposed to take it on the chin ? The harassment ? Shall we send some folks to grope you before every class and see how you handle? And the less said about cogsash and whether it even works the better. Young women faculty are targeted by students and Jgls and the pattern is clear after all these years and the admin doesn’t do a thing about it. She’s not even the only case from last year.

All these so called experts in sexual harassment law and you cannot figure out to have her trade sections with a colleague so she doesn’t have to teach people who were harassing her ?

What is even the point of making someone teach topics they’re uncomfortable with ? Like that’s not gonna change because you guys can’t be bothered to match faculty interest with course. And if she had to teach stuff like pornography- I understand why she might be uncomfortable doing that in a class where the students are literally sexually assaulting her. what a pathetic response. for one thing you are faulting her for not going to the cops and if she had gone to the cops, we would have faulted her for not seeking institutional redress. notwithstanding those speculations, her not going to the cops does not absolve the institution of its responsibilities to make it a safe workspace for its employees.

secondly, your argument seems to be that JGLS is no different from the bad practices at NLUS, smaller private law colleges and state universities when it comes to allocation of teaching load vis-a-vis the subject expertise. so basically you are confirming what a lot of people have been saying for a while - that there is nothing special about JGLU when it comes to academic practices and standards. Hence only an idiot would pay that fee and study there
