Why does the CJI need to travel in a Mercedes Benz costing close to 1 crore rupees? Why not an Indian car?
Why does the PM need to wear a suit worth 4.3 crores? Let's keep this going.
I think we've economically grown enough as a country to commission a merc for the Chief Justice of the Nation. Also, there is literally NO homegrown luxury car maker in India.
Honest answer: it offers (custom) security features that other car manufacturers cannot offer.
Nearly a decade ago a group senior HC judges (many subsequently made it to SC) bureaucrats etc were taken to Canada. Everyone were stunned to see that their counterparts in Canada not only got their own mail, coffee, water, tea etc but also traveled around without the bells and whistles. Some of the Canadian judges actually cycled or even took public transport. And the best was the kind of relationship they had with their secretarial and research staff.

When India became "Republic" we did away with Royalty etc (on paper). But it is very much in our minds. We rail against dynastic parties, cliques et al but are more than okay with dynasts and entrenched ecosystems that allow such cultures to not just survive but also survive.

DYC isn't the first. Wouldn't be the last.
You said it perfectly, what the fuck is the need for "royalty" in government services and that too in a democratic set up. White sahabs have been replaced by brown sahabs. While the actual white sahabs in UK, US and Canada go to work on cycles. See Obama he is retired and moves along without any pomp and show. But in India Britishers have left a legacy of royalty that will be hard to remove now. You know the entire craze about certain govt jobs? It is only beacause of this royalty. Remove the VIP treatment and no one will sit for these exams.
Crime Rates dekha hai idhar? Upar se civic sense zero.

India is unsafe even for nobodies like us, let alone a person holding one of the most important constitutional posts.

While we are at it, how do judges of the SCOTUS roll? On bikes?
Imagine the CJI of the world's largest democracy roaming around in a Tata Nano.
What's wrong with a Tata Harrier or Tata Nexon EV or Tata Safari or Mahindra XUV 700 ? Don't say that they aren't good enough because each of these cars are being used in defence services too - presumably with some modifications of course!
apne kaam se kaam kar rakh tu bhai.

he's the CJI, he doesnt draw a large salary for the amount of work he puts in, a mercedes is the least he can be provided with, its about comfort and standard of living. not everything has to be looked at with the eye of jealousy, there needs to be some honour and luxury attached to the highest judicial office in the country.
A junior judge puts in more effort than the CJI in terms of workload. Is he being given even a decent car, let alone a luxury one?
What amount of work he puts in? He puts in just as much as anyone else who would become a CJI would have put in. I mean why would you be proud of the amount of work put in by a person (or rather by atleast 3-5 persons at a time) when they can afford wasting 2-3 hours on just reading out their judgements aloud in court? Could have heard at least a few cases in this time..but I guess PR comes first these days - you would want reels/shorts to be made regarding what the courts actually end up deciding and not just clips of what happened during the proceedings.
lol that particular models costs less than 1 cr bud, however what’s the need for a 15Lish number plate (0001)
Not only CJU but Other SC Judges car also changed from Skoda Superb to BMW series 3 car whereas Secretary General & Registrars shifted to Toyota Hycross (black edn) from Maruti Ciaz
