1. MP Singh: He's the entire reason people like Sudhir, Shamnad, Prabhas etc became who they are. Apart from almost taking NUJS to the top spot (which is a very difficult institution to handle given the politics), he also nurtured a generation of talented academics by identifying and nurturing them from scratch. That is the sign of a visionary.
2. Madhava Menon: The man who conceptualised NLUs. Established NLS as the humanities and law school and established NUJS as the alternate school of thought for studying the law from a scientific perspective. The reason he is second on the list? He started things but could build them up. Both institutions were poorly funded from the beginning and that legacy haunts NLUs to this day. NLUs don't even get 10% the funding that IITs and NITs do.
3. Faizan Mustafa: Whatever NALSAR is today is a remnant of Mustafa's legacy. He has done more for NALSAR than Sudhir has for NLS so far. But importantly, he did it while taking most people along (students, faculty). Of course, nobody can please everyone.
4. Ranbir Singh: The man built a new national law university from scratch and turned it into the highest funded NLU and among the top 3 within the span of a decade. That is a phenomenal standard regardless of his slightly dictatorial personality.
5. Sudhir Krishnaswamy: He is probably next best benevolent dictator. Although so far his dictatorial decisions have made more news than any stellar progress at NLS. But progress is slow, so let's give him the benefit of doubt given his passion. He's moving in the right direction, by generating funds, poaching faculty, emphasizing on research. But come on, you don't need to be an asshole to be Steve Jobs! Also, you're running a college, not a 3 trillion dollar company.
