At NALSAR, there are a couple of left-wing groups; however, they are not as fringe as the left-wing groups at JGLS. There are no right-wing groups in NALSAR; certain individuals hold right-wing ideologies, but aside from writing anonymous emails, they don't engage in any substantial activities.
I'm not familiar with the situation at other NLUs, but I know some people at MNLU Mumbai who tell me the situation there is similar to that of NALSAR.
students at nlus are polarised sometimes as well. there are right and left wing folks. but it never comes to things like this. They wont video each other and try and get each other cancelled/ imprisoned. They learn to disagree with each other and move on. Its hard enough to make it through law school without this on your head as well. Im pretty left wing and most of my friends in law school were right wing- and they and I moved toward the centre over time. They were my friends because they were good people who were nice to me. their politics didnt matter. that feeling was mutual. Even many left wing and right wing people on campus would ultimately confess that they agree with some aspects of the other politics. A socially liberal person might agree that regulating small businesses might not be the best thing. A person with right wing views would agree that the bigotry and hatred toward gay people was odious to them. People are complex- they have views on topics across the political spectrum based on their own experiences. when youre in a small university where you learn everyones name - you also learn that theyre complex so the motivation to paint with a broad brush goes away.
The other thing thats important is that competition for top jobs and scholarships is fierce and its the main focus most of the time. no one has time for all this. Admin at NLUs also do not generally encourage cancelling professors or students. When some students tried to get a harvard alum in trouble at NLS, Sudhir stood up for her, refused to be cowed down and let the mob run the show. This isnt true for all NLUs but some for sure.
The problem with jgls is- 1) their students are non serious enough to waste time on all this instead of studying, 2) the curriculum and faculty are not allowed to be rigorous enough to keep students engaged. 3) its a very big university where people dont know each other and BBA and BA students even are often at odds. 4) to some extent the inmates are running the asylum. students have figured out that they can get professors and other students in trouble and that the admin would listen to them. it starts small- getting admin to change grades or demand a retest or demand extensions or lie about medical accomodation- but that kind of corruption and entitlement goes deep. 5) the admin at JGLS is corrupt. Theyre more interested in keeping their job and giving themselves raises than they are in building an academic institution.
A few NLS students (both LW and RW) fight over mail threads on literally anything that happens in the world while we (other students) get some entertainment and respite from the Law school rigour.
Everyone has been talking about what the LW students said, but watch the whole video carefully. The first girl says a group of RW students chanted Jai Shri Ram and disrupted them. Also, the RW group were larger in numbers. So it’s clear that:
- there are both RW and LW students at JGLS
- they are clashing with each other
- contrary to perception, the RW group may be larger
So I’m curious to know the scene at NLUs?? Is it the same?
