1. It is not just about having legal contacts. It is just as much about having really strong social contacts and robust networks, even more so, as a first generation Advocate. It is at times depressingly uphill. You need a fat, fat degree of patience. You need a thick skin.
2. Sorry to say this, but with utmost respect to the seats of justice, you do observe the degree of difference, how so ever slight, when you appear with or for your relative who is your senior at the Bar, as against when you appear as a first gen. The Bar treats you as an outsider. Naturally, so - none of them have known you growing up. You enter as an outsider, after almost two decades of your lifetime. You have to watch their face fall slightly when they ask you if you are related to someone who has the same last name as your own, and you respond saying that you are not really related to that individual.
3. Your own family often cannot fathom the nature of your work. They are unable to understand why is the earning so, so low. This applies whether you are from economically comfortable circumstances, or even otherwise. At times, it is not even because they want to kick you when you're already down low; it is truly not easy for them to understand the entire system.
4. Money is low in the initial years, no real guarantee of better fortunes later. Social life in the early day at least, isn't very charming. Seeing your peers in other careers doing well really doesn't help with the creeping self doubt.
5. If money even for your own enjoyment, not considering family responsibilities, is important to you, litigation may not be the smartest choice. MBA, any day.
MBA anyway. Basically 99% of corporate lawyers are people who suck at maths and won't be able to crack CAT/GMAT, so they opted to be second-tier corporate professionals. Better to do an MBA and be a first-tier corporate professional.
