They need to have a good profile. The top 10 people usually get placed solely on the basis of their rank on day Z. For others, past internships, publications and interview matters a lot.

This isn't true. At the top 3 NLUs, certain firms definitely select from the top 15 students, but ofcourse the others go down the ladder. Then there are in house companies placing students, apart from tier 2 and 3 students.
