Law students are supposed to work hard. If you cannot do so, then this field is not for you. Law School won't compromise with its quality. So, whine and vent if you like, you are entitled to that so long as you get the work done in time.
I believe that it pushes you to respect deadlines and not be lazy. We have deadlines almost every week and there are heavy penalties for missing one (can even get zero). So, it kind of prepares you for the professional world. Other than this, there is not much benefit to this.
More courses. In the pre-Sudhir era when there were no electives (and only 5th year seminars), this meant that there were way more courses that were mandatory. One couldn't lighten the load by picking easier courses. That was also why 5th year was considered the ultimate chilling year in Law School (most people got jobs by 3rd trimester of 4th year).
The trimester system has got no benefit. It forces the students to be constantly "doing" something and (as is clear from other comments) in India if you not doing something, you will be seen as lazy. Education is not just about doing, it is also a time to learn "thinking" and "discovering". The trimester system does not allow that and in India "thinking" is seen as doing nothing - without realizing that thinking is the greatest skill a student can acquire. The ability to think and think well is priceless.
NLUJ's "academic rigour" is non-existent. Students regularly plagiarise for their projects and there is hardly any open book exam, nor application based question. Only rote learning.
There’s no benefit to this system. NLUD and NALSAR have semester systems and their student outcomes are not any worse. To be fair, NLS does have a good culture of academic rigour, but it’s pointless with the 300+ batch size now. Kids will slack off regardless.
There's a distinct difference between the quality of NLUD and NLS grads at least. The latter have till date been much better on an average. That may change with the batch size now, can't say for sure.
That’s a load of crap if I’ve ever heard it. NLS grads are today some of the most overrated and NLUD is far better, both in terms of skill and humility. The comment has been marked trollish by the idiot Mod from NLS, obviously.
Mods, judges, senior advocates, AORs, law firm partners, entrepreneurs, UPSC crackers, Rhodes scholars, academics, you name it, NLS is ahead of NLUD by miles in every department.
NLS should show a little reverence considering how they've been humbled by the Supreme Court after their domicile issue. In any case, from 2013-23, NLS is not ahead of NLUD in either Rhodes or UPSC rankers or any of these fronts since NLUD's first batch graduated in 2013. Not even AoRs, NLUD has as many if not more. Free-riding on the coattails of 20 year older alumni can only take you so far.
Please show some respect to the only true NLU in the country - NLU Delhi. NLSIU is like a grandfather who everyone was quite sick of and who's finally on his deathbed while NLUD is like a young fire-breathing dragon waiting to conquer the world. On a serious note, NLS student quality today is a joke and NLUD is easily on par if not far better.
Trimester system is fine in one year masters or Executive MBA type of degrees where you have to do a lot in very limited time.
Semester system is better for 5 year law degree. It gives time for internships and breaks.
All NLUs except NLS and NLIU follow semester system. All other universities follow semester system.
These two colleges should correct their academic calendar for once and ever.
NLUJ has 2 semesters in a year, has arguably the most rigorous acad schedule among the NLUs
