The reason is simple, and has much to do with how we find ourselves. Most of the compulsory courses are absolutely rubbish, we get 1/6 good prof every semester. (Mostly noojie profs who deserve credit.) The rest 5 are taught by really really really really horrible profs; in terms of quality. Profs who have absolutely ZERO idea of the subject they are teaching. Cgpa then becomes something to be 'gamed' to 'look' good on your CV. Because, ultimately batch rank is almost the sole determinative criteria from internships, to jobs, llms everything - at the most basic level even if you do v well w extracurricular - a bad batch rank/gpa will significantly limit your opportunities.

Overall this scoring marks is "well known" to be totally divorced from learning (and for good reasons); and ordinary prudence dictates that you avoid risk.

Now enter good electives like Lovely Ma'am, SKG's etc. If you take them, you are sure to see your GPA and Rank dip. For your competitors ( rent seekers) will for sure go for these 'sub-standard' electives where marks are freely distributed as the holy man from Nazareth distributed bread. Bad profs give high marks to refined rent seeks. (good profs make you work.) (and remember that throughout the compulsory subject marks 5/6 times are already 'gamed' entities.) Barring Tri, KCo etc., most firms rely almost exclusively on GPA for the very round of screening - dayz and internship. Ofcourse again this GPA is nothing but a stack of proof how how well you game the system - people w high GPA just know how to do it well. You can choose to opt out of this game, get good electives - but you risk losing - worse, others will keep playing and winning. Zero sum, infact. (System rewards rent seekers and punishes people who wish to learn.)

Ofcourse, this is goddam despicable. 'Somebody' wanted to be different and focus really on learning. But NUJS and the free market punished 'everybody' who did it. These 5/6 profs highly reward bullshit and have little care for true learning. They give marks to 'anybody' who can do a set of few tasks and pander to their ego (an important move in the game, you see.) Fighting w the system is useless when 'somebody' has a loan to pay. And the flame for learning extinguishes when 'everybody' realises that sucking up the these 5/6 is really needed for the high GPA otherwise " almost all" HRs will throw 'your' CV in a bin.

Anybody who wonders who the 1/6 profs are, here's a simple test: they read the projects you submit carefully, so you start working on it atleast 7-10 days in advance.

Why run behind marks though? If students were that interested to learn corp, electives like insolvency laws, project finance, corporate taxation etc would have gotten more students than forensics, disaster management law, public health law. Believe it or not, it's only marks that becomes relevant consideration for 95% of students.

The same students then struggle basics of subjects in professional life despite scoring 80+ in college.

Sandeepa Bhat doesn't mark low. Last 3-4 years, more than 50% of students have gotten E grade.

Similarly Atul's elective used to get scrapped, even SKB's elective, Chengappa Sir's elective, Shouvik's, Vaneeta, Kavita, Soumya Sahin, Faisal's elective got scrapped in last 2 years.

What is common amongst all these- demand hardwork for the subject and mark as per merit.

Review of the courses you mentioned

Lovely: nobody is going to touch that person's elective after the two semester trauma that we had in the first year. She might be a great teacher (undoubtedly) but is not the most flexible or accommodating.

Sandeepa: largely irrelevant elective and historically gives low marks. Lose lose for students

Arup: great teacher. His enviro course was the best structured and delivered course that I have seen in my five years here. But water law? How is it relevant when the lil part of the Batch that is placed is going for Corp jobs and the unplaced majority needs good Corp credentials to get the job they desire. The way he covered even the most minor rules and regulations in enviro was commendable and I would happily take his course if he was teaching something corp based.

Vkt: his juris course was not structured in the best possible manner and his marking bell curve is also on the lower side. Not a good deal

Mouri and Sanjay Kumar: you will know why the courses were not taken if you are a noojie.

Some faculty may be really great but if their courses are not relevant why will students want to put in effort. Even the drugs course is largely irrelevant but the faculty has a great marking history. If I am not going to learn anything relevant, might as well chill and get free marks.

Nujs does need a thorough review, but to align the courses with the expectations and needs of students. Analyse why certain kinds of faculty give free marks, you'll be surprised to know the reason. Get good faculty with relevant courses and you'll see courses like drugs perish. E.g. IT Law

Also get a legitimate moderation committe and align the marking scale to the standards acceptable in foreign universities. I'm not asking that even the lowest rankers be given a first class degree but atleast get the ratios right.

Utterly unfortunate that electives by good professors who demand hardwork and mark as per merit have been scrapped due to lack of more than 10 students. These include electives of International Aviation Law by Dr Sandeepa Bhat, advisor to National Space Policy and International Civil Aviation Organisation; Sports Law by Lovely Das Gupta (only professor to teach the subject at NUJS), Corporate Tax by Sanjay Kumar (expert in taxation who teaches really well); Third World Approach to International Law by Vijay Kishore Tiwari; Water Law by Arup Poddar, Nanotechnology law by Mouri Ghosh.

Shame on students for opting for scam electives and getting E without any studying.

NUJS needs a thorough review.
