I am a 2023 Undergrad in English Honours from a local rural college in West Bengal.
As of December 2023, I am 21.
I very interested in law and want to pursue t.
I belong to a economically poor family. My family income is less than 1 lac per annum.
So I have few queries regarding law school admissions and law career in general.
I want to prep for law school entrance exams such as CLAT, AILET, NLSAT, CUET PG & UG,HCET Law (3Y & 5 Y) etc for admission into 5 Years of LLB in 2025-26 and for admission into 3 Years in 2024-25.
1) So if I get into a top law school, will I be able to 20-25 lacs of Education LOAN for the entire program without any collateral?
2) Do top NLus and other top law schools give scholarships and financial aid to economically poor students?
3) Regarding the career, for 5 Years Course, I will graduate by 27-28 and for 3 Years Course, I will graduate by 25-26. So will I be facing any problem due to this 3-5 years of seniority as compared the average people graduating in 22-23 age.
Want genuine answers only.
Share your experiences regarding this money (fees) and time (age) issue.
Nevertheless, it's important to note that even if banks limit is more than the fees for the course, then also they might not cover all the fees heads, and you may have to put in your own money. Then there is something called margin (usually around 15%), which is deducted from your disbursement amount. For example, if you have sanctioned loan for fees of 2,00,000 Per Annum, and you submit a demand notice to bank for 2,00,000 which is your actual fees payable to college, bank will deduct 15%, and will give you only 1,70,000 to pay your fees, and rest 30,000 you have to arrange yourself.
Furthermore, in some colleges mess fees is not collected in annual fees and it's collected seperately, this too will not be financed and you may have to pay 40-50K per annum by yourself.
So even if you get an education loan, you will need around 4,00,000 for 5 years to pay for these expenses.
2. Almost every NLU has a merit cum need based scholarship, so you might get that but there can be eligibility criteria like CGPA, no backlog, no disciplinary actions etc. Again, check it from the website of college.
3. No experience of this, so won't comment.
Just one thing, let's say I get some scholarships from law school, then I can manage with the help of loan amount right?
I don't think I would be able to spend 4-5 lacs on my own.
Mail them up
You can graduate in law at 24/25 years of age and not 27/28.
2. Three good institutes you can target. Two of them have annual tuition fee less than Rs 10k
1. Delhi University - Campus Law Centre (Admission through CUET - PG)
2. GLC Mumbai/ ILS Pune ( Admission through MHCET)
3. BHU Law School (Admission through CUET)
4. NLS Bangalore (Admission through NLSAT - best among all 4 but if you can get selected, you may get scholarship or education loan)
I'm not suggesting Jindal Global Law School though it has one of the best LLB 3 year programme because that may not be affordable for you.
Best wishes.
