Not being a dick but being a student myself having not experienced this I have no real input here, maybe others in a similar situation help?
even I had shitty faculty, never relied on them. But I was lucky enough to get good seniors and liberal attendance.
As far as tips for networking in adr comps: I am somewhat extroverted and on the first day itself i simply go knock rooms adjacent to mine and introduce myself and talk futher, almost always this has helped both of us because even they want to network but are hesitant to approach. For the next 2-3 days of the competition we become good friends and finnaly on the last day where almost all the comps have a party night or a networking dinner, this helps me losen up and talk to more people because i already have 2-3 people who i can talk to and other just join in as opposed me just sitting alone on the table.
While I somewhat agree about the college part but contacts are not something only limited to those who are generational lawyers. I myself have networked in adr comps, college, internships and these contacts have always helped in the longer run. If you have a killer profile, you just need that one contact to help you get your CV seen. This networking aspect is huge in law and should not be disregarded as only limited to nepotism because it will not only help you land a job now but in the longer run this is how you land more clients. People skills are a huge part of a lawyers life, knowing how to talk to clients how to retain them, how to make friends.
