There is always some case law proximate to a research question.

Always.
True, but we very well know how partners and PAs swear that they know there is some exact case law on something, even though they have no clear memory or clue about it.
Now clueless interns are dictating to partners about how research is to be done.
This whole generation of interns and freshes are so full of themselves. They know very little, are not humble, and then moan and complain.
if there were always a case law on something, we wouldn't need extensive written/oral hearings for a subsequent matter.
There is always something. If not, then usually close enough to pass it as workable.
