The OP, through their post and comments, has made it very easy for their colleagues to identify who they are - (i) equity partner who is rumoured to have an affair, (ii) partner in seychelles, (iii) gen corp SA, (iv) family background ("upperish" middle class), (v) condescending and likely highly privileged ("backgrounds dissimilar to mine" is a very polite way of saying "not as rich as me"), (vi) descriptions about their colleagues' purchases, and (vii) possibly female.
Would('nt) be a shame if your colleagues identify who you are and judge you irl, the way you think you you're judging them anonymously.
Not going to comment upon how socially unaware and out of touch with the country's economic realities the OP comes across as. Anyhow. Happy diwali, "mature adult" (?)
Calling their actions amateur attempts. Not cool. They are your teammates, share in their joy, donβt mock their choices.
Second, clearly you were curious enough to click on a post titled "T-1 firm Diwali excesses!", so spare us the judgment. You are clearly as interested in the judgey-gossip as the rest of us. As someone who works at this job, but doesn't worship at the altar of corporate law firms, it IS lol-worthy that those from backgrounds dissimilar to mine (upperish middle class) are burning through money earned spending weekends at the office, all to play this amateur attempt at keeping up with the joneses. My entire college fee could have been covered by the cash these two threw around on a watch and handbag. I make more money than both of them, but I choose to be a mature adult.
But sure, judge me for judging them.
I'll (T1 SA/Gen Corp) start - saw a junior associate blow so much money on an Omega watch, I was silently lolling. The kid must have burned at least 6 months savings. A colleague spent more than a month's salary on a handbag. My (non-equity) partner flew off to Seychelles with his family, his instagram has been insufferable. A PA in another team bought an SUV, he's a nice guy to be honest. Top level partner had a muted Diwali apparently, trouble in paradise trying to keep both the (soon-to-be divorced) wife and the much younger girlfriend/soon-to-be fiance happy.
