I'm incredibly proud of the Gen Z lot that are now taking up A0-A1 positions in firms for creating actual change that we late millennials couldn't. It took so much out of my life and soul to make Partner at a T1 and now I am envious of the freshers who have the guts to stand up to exploitation and say no. My team has seen improved hours and better management of work expectations ever since we've had to deal with high attrition from freshers who simply refuse to sacrifice their sleep and health for arbitrary deadlines. What was annoying at first has actually led to institutional change that I couldn't make happen in my time.
To youngsters reading this: 70 hours is a joke. Do your 40, go live your life. Your parents are the youngest now they will ever be, your relationships still stand a chance and your back pains haven't set in yet. Hustle and grind but never at a personal cost. Cheers to your generation and thanks from mine.
Not the original commenter here, but last few years - post Covid essentially - we have seen a lot of change and I must agree that it is driven largely by the younger lot that will make their displeasure known at having to make sacrifices to meet expectations... next generation is not without its issues but there is a lot to learn also. Maybe people are not realising that Gen Z is not 15 year olds.. they are now a sizeable portion of workforce. Gen Z must drive change
Totally agree with you brother and more power to your lot. I recently made a switch from corporate to law firm out of curiosity. Figured in the first 2 months only that the work is not that urgent always and unnecessary work pressure is created to foster a hostile environment. I hope one day when youll be partner, you will remember these days and take actual steps in improving your team and work environment. Work is not life and vice versa. No document will come to life like that of harry potter. We are just part of the machinery, and we are always replaceable. It's health, parents and loved ones that actually matter and we just never jeopardies this for the sake of work. Found the work so mundane that had to revert back to corporate. Jab kaam vahi hai toh time faltu q du. Work life balance is need of the hour not 70 hour thing. No wonder this boomers are not open to technology. Pta nahi computer pr kese agye kuch toh aj bhi type writer ki naseeyat dete hai.
As a fresher, who gave up an opportunity with a decent pay with 60 hours of work a week, and now dejected (due to unemployment), I am incredibly happy reading this. Was always confused whether I made the right call.
But this thread has reignited me to look for a job with a balanced work environment. I am now more determined to find such places where no hierarchies exist at workplace, where you have colleagues and not bosses, where people are compassionate and who understand having a space for yourself, and where you are also taught to transcend your comfort zone and contribute your own way to a workplace.
