In an article published today, Business Standard editor TN Ninan suggests that it’s practically guaranteed that India will host the 2036 Olympics. He uses Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016 as precedents and says that India’s economic situation in 2036 will be similarly strong. Plus, logically, the Olympics cannot neglect the world’s most populous country.
However, on Ahmedabad being the host city, he says:
“Most host cities have been a country’s capital or one of its biggest cities. The exception was St Louis in the US, the host in 1904. If Ahmedabad is India’s preferred candidate city, as seems likely, it too would be an exception since it does not figure in the top five in India’s city rankings by population, area, gross domestic product, cleanliness, or safety for women. While it is a business and educational centre, it is not an airline hub, is less familiar with English, is mostly vegetarian, and has prohibition.”
So, should Ahmedabad be the host city? Why not Delhi NCR? It will soon have 4 airports (including Jewar), has hosted the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games before, and includes parts of UP and Haryana, which send the most athletes to the Olympics. If not Delhi NCR, then why not a joint bid by Mumbai/Pune or Bengaluru/Hyderabad or even Mumbai/Goa?
First ask your representatives to build a planned city. Then dream of something like hosting Olympics. Agreed that you clean streets which no one can emulate. But that doesn't mean Indore is good in every aspect. And in terms of planned development, Indore is amongst some of the worst cities of India. Some of the results are easily known to everyone - lack of open spaces, lack of green expanse, water scarcity and horrible traffic of Indore despite being a Tier 2 city of lower segment.
If the goal is to help the economy and not just politics, the delhi-haryana-UP trijunction area would be great.
could also go for karnataka-Telangana-maharashtra too.
the worst would be gujrat, prohibition, lack of non veg cuisines, next to no sports culture, one has to work hard to find a worst destination for a sports tournament.
Ahemdabad makes a mediocre case. Not too big, but not too small either. And given current regime's blatant disregard of equal treatment to the various regions/states of the country, Ahmedabad has a high chance of submitting a favourable bid for hosting Olympics in 2036.
2036 Ahmedabad would be a fitting place to celebrate the hundred years of 1936 Berlin. It will also show that either the IOC has a sense of dry humour or lack of political perspective.
Yep, to contrast the inhuman treatment of the minorities in Nazi Germany vs the treatment of minorities here where everybody bends their back to make sure their delicate little feelings are not hurt in the slightest, their regressive ideology never questioned, and their patriotism never questioned even when the night sky is peppered with fireworks everytime Pakistan wins a cricket match.
Lynched any meat carrier lately? Or started riots in the NE? Or participated in the hate speeches that these self proclaimed Sadhus and Sadhvis and politicians routinely churn out? You seem like a prime candidate for such things.
You seem like one of those bursting firecrackers yourselves. Such misled people and such misled ideologies, no wonder most of our land is now not ours (Indonesia et al)
Hyderabad as there's a lot of infra from the Afro-Asian Games that they hosted. Delhi is obvious as you can upgrade the CWG infra. But honestly, Mumbai would be the best city.
New Olympic RulesInternational Olympic Committee ("IOC") has modified the Olympic Charter to increase its flexibility by removing the date of election from 7 years before the games to 11 years before the games and changing the host from a single city/region/country to multiple cities, regions, or countries. Following changes in the bidding rules, the IOC selected Brisbane as the winning bid in July 2021 to host the 2032 Summer Olympics.
2024 Parliamentary Election
Per the modified rules, the host of 2036 Summer Olympics ("the Games") shall be selected in mid 2025, post 2024 General Elections in India. Any bid by India for the Games, depends upon the outcome of the 2024 General Elections. If BJP loses and Congress led alliance comes to the power, there won't be any bidding by India for the Games.
Return of BJP
In case Narendra Modi led BJP returns to the power, Ahmedabad would be the first preference of the incumbent government to bid for the Games. Construction work of Olympic village has already started in Ahmedabad, which is required (basic infra) to justify the bid by the city before the IOC Olympic Committee.
Joint Bid - Ahmedabad & Noida
As mentioned earlier, IOC has modified its rules by changing the host from a single city/region/country to multiple cities, regions, or countries.
Both Ahmedabad and Noida fall under the jurisdiction of BJP led governments and both the cities will have a supporting infrastructure that is required to host the Games. Considering all the aforementioned reasons, a joint bid by Ahmedabad and Noida cannot be ruled out.
Other Contenders
The modification of IOC Charter in a haste and rapid selection of Brisbane as the host of 2032 Summer Olympics has blindsided many countries, including Qatar, Germany, Hungary and Indonesia, which were also willing to host 2032 Games. These countries will certainly bid for the Games. Hence the path leading to the hosting rights for the Games won't be easy for India.
Has to be Ahmedabad with world's largest cricket stadium, Asia's biggest indoor stadium at Eka Arena, Olympic size Swimming pool, artificial rooftop football turf and soon to be developed Sardar Patel Sports Arena.
Instead of one city, maybe India can adopt a 2-city approach, say Delhi and Hyderabad jointly hosting the Games. This is also in tune with the recent trend of multiple cities hosting major tournaments ( like the 2026 FIFA WC which is being hosted in USA, Mexico and Canada jointly, even Indonesia organized the 2018 Asian Games in 2 different cities of Jakarta and Palembang) ) and has many advantages, such as -
Cost sharing between 2 cities
Building of infrastructure and sporting culture in 2 cities instead of 1
The load of tourists and athletes can be distributed
Kolkata should host 2036 olympics, considering the locational advantages there. Lakes, Ganga river and Bay of Bengal can be used for the aquatic events. This will also be a good reason for the authorities to clean these water bodies. Further, olympics will also mean building up of infra, and that can be done in the adjoining North 24 Paragnas and South 24 Paragnas districts, leading to actual development of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.
India shouldn't be hosting Olympics at all. I though everyone knew by now that Olympics are a money pit and it's mostly just an excuse for corruption for developing countries hosting it. Does no one remember CWG?

Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh which includes Noida, Greater Noida and YEIDA, could emerge as a strong contender for the Games. Yogi Adityanath led UP Government has recently announced construction of an Olympic city near the upcoming Noida Airport. A sports cluster of 29 Stadiums and residences for 5000 Olympic participants will set it apart from other possible city venues. Noida already has a world class sporting arena viz. Budha International Circuit for hosting F1/ Moto GP races. Further, Noida/ G.Noida has one of the best existing civic infrastructures among all Indian cities.
