- While such expenses perhaps mean nothing to partners, I do think it's quite a lot for an associate. Are associates really expected to splurge like this? Are they supposed to take a loan with the idea that they pay back after they become partners?
- If I wear a Titan watch, Bata shoes and drive a Swift, will I really be shunned ? Will I really be rejected by colleagues, bosses and potential dates? Or does it vary from firm to firm? The thing is, I want to save as much as I can for an LLM or MBA abroad.
- Finally, I am from an elite school (as are my parents) and have been told by classmates that I speak English with a "posh" accent (which I just picked up from my parents). Will this offset the negatives of wearing cheap brands?
That’s probably a very select group of people talking about. Definitely interesting to people who are into that sort of thing. The rest of us who don’t comment or take interest because we are not interested/ not insecure about such things.
I mean just because lot of young guys like wearing overpriced Nike Jordan’s doesn’t mean you have to spend 40k on shoes. If that’s your thing, and that brings you joy, go for it. If that’s not your thing, use that money somewhere else.
There are people who live very humbly and save every penny so they having savings to fall back on. There are other folks who are extremely bullish, want to live life to the fullest / live in the moment and enjoy wearing those watches.
I mean - when you are sitting at 3am in the night working on the DD, all these things don’t matter. Both a Titan and a Hermes watch will show the same time.
When you grow up, you don’t care so much about fitting in. You just want to do things that make you happy. It can be having chai at Marine Drive or an expensive coffee at Taj overlooking Marine Drive.
