The Rhodes is given for excellence. Lots of rich kids apply because it's one of the world's most recognisable validations. If the golf and polo guy is one of India' s 5 best candidates, he should get it.
Not commenting on any of the other stuff, but back in the 90s, it was taken for granted that some sporting ability gave you a heads up with the Rhodes. The will of Cecil Rhodes even indirectly alluded to this.
Many of the NLS applicants played up their sporting credentials ("Intra - University champion", for example).
Of course, that didn't guarantee you the Rhodes. But when there are at least 25-30 people who could have justifiably got the award, sports helped. It's completely misleading to call it a "sports quota award".
One of the mods is from NLS. Some guy called tied-1 NLU. S/he also publishes all the ridiculous fan boy PR comments asking for a Nobel Prize for some random alumni from NLS and the like.
This list is a joke. Note that there are no members from IISc, IIMB, NIFT, NID, IIT, or NIMHANS - all central institutions present in Karnataka. First of all, with this so-called state education policy, the state is rejecting the NEP; second, as already discussed - this is one of the reasons why NLS will never be made into a "national" institute. All the national institutes in the state have deliberately distanced themselves from this, a strategic decision. The state will not let NLS go, and the center will not touch it even with a bargepole.
There are people with physics and management on there. Youโre assuming that science professors wouldnโt be on the political left or liberal - thatโs a mistake. And assuming humanities/social sciences professors are unable to do their job because of their political beliefs is also a mistake. When the bjp strives for political balance in its appointments - then we can talk about really quite moderate panels like this one.
But it's disappointing that the committee has such few (if any) STEM people. The left-liberal fetish for humanities is fine, but please give space to STEM also.

All hail the messiah, he is so meritocratic with a sports-quota Rhodes!
