Recently noticed NUJS has taken in six students via vacancies, five AI-general. No other T1 NLU has ever had these many vacant seats (except maybe during covid times). Why do you think this is happening? Seems like the shoddy campus is scaring students away
First of all, I would question your premise that NUJS is a tier 1 NLU. It was #2 when Menon, Chimni and MP Singh were VCs, but post Ishwar Bhat it has now fallen behind NALSAR, NLUD, NLUJ, GNLU and JGLS, if you give weightage to infrastructure and faculty, not just placements.
To answer your main question, yes, it is the campus., especially for girls. I know a girl who unhappily left NUJS for NLUJ after seeing the campus. Boys are generally messy and have no problem living there, but girls give a lot of emphasis to cleanliness and hygiene. Also, NLUJ has single rooms.
The campus has been the same from the beginning itself. What has changed is its quality and admin. The admin no longer has any power, it is held by TMC leaders and students with TMC connections. On top of this, the political violence which has become synonymous with elections is also problematic.
The political bias of the moderator is disgusting. It is a FACT that the TMC controls the admin. Just go to the website and look at the governing body members. Filled with MLAs, MPs, TMC-office bearers and open sympathisers. Why are people marked trollish for pointing out a FACT?
Here is the truth: most students from upper-middle class and affluent backgrounds, who are used to a certain comfortable standard of living, leave after seeing the state of the hostels. The only ones who retain their places are:
- People from Kolkata, who commute daily from home.
- Certain people from neighbouring Bihar and Jharkhand, from whom proximity to home by train/plane trumps filthy living conditions.
- People from poor families, who are used to discomfort and hardship and do not mind the hostels.
As a result, the demographics of NUJS has changed a lot.
Oh, you mean every year the children of IAS, Ministers, industrialists and others who graduate from NUJS are figment of our imagination? The people who stay are the ones who have been taught by their families that they are here to educate themselves, not indulge in a luxurious lifestyle. Whatever is necessary for that education is here in sufficient quantities. Rest is just add ons.
Nobody is asking for luxurious hostels, just livable ones. Hostels at NUJS are simply too overcrowded and unable to support the number of students, this has caused them to decay beyond repair. First year girls are stuffed into 18 bed hostels like sardines in a tin. There is mildew on walls, not enough study tables, rickety beds, etc. Nobody paying 3 lakhs a year wants their children to live in conditions like those lol
From a fresher at nujs, I can assure you it has nothing to do with academic standards falling or anything like that. One girl left for Oxford Law, one Pune guy for SLS Pune. One guy has CS offers from Tier 2 IITs and Tier 1 NITs and will probably end up leaving. Only one person left for NLUJ because of the hostel. Infrastructure is shoddy, but it's not a driving factor in making people leave.
True that is because NUJS is comparable to NLS as far as placements are concerned so for someone who is only looking for placements then that's not a big issue. However, SLS is considered to be much lower on every front compared to NUJS so if someone is leaving for SLS from NUJS then thats a cause for worry!
Yes. It is a serious issue which needs to be addressed. You canβt expect people from decent families to live in slum-like conditions. No one is asking for fancy Jindal hostels, just a room with enough space and clean toilets are good enough. Itβs true that boys are dirtier than girls and have a higher tolerance level, but these hostel rooms are unliveable!
Stop exaggerating. Hundreds of students have lived in the same rooms before you and gone on to achieve great things. If you have got such fancy expectations from a public university hostel, then leave. The person who replaces you will be less entitled and a greater asset for the institution.
To people from well-off families, the packages are simply not worth living in slum-like conditions for five years. Also wanting mold-free rooms, adequate desks, and more than just 3 washrooms for 40 people is not a fancy expectation.

Also there will be some people who leave after a year or half because of clat
