This is a detailed analysis of the queer alliances functioning in different law schools across the country, focusing on their status of affairs, experiences and the future ahead. Definitely a fresh read considering the scarce of inter-NLU initiatives. More such collaborations on different fronts should take place!
Nice post but one factual inaccuracy - NLS was not the first to have a queer group on campus. That distinction goes to NALSAR's gender and sexuality forum started by Danish Sheikh and a couple of his batch mates shortly after the Naz judgment. Don't know whether it is still active though
Danish was mentored by Arvind and Siddharth Narrain and others from NLS who led the movement to strike down 377. He did great work at NALSAR but you have to give NLS this one. NLS students were way ahead of Nalsarites on this question.
In December 1996, a group on the NLS campus led by Sanjay (now Kabir) Bavikatte organized the first gay rights seminar ever to be held on a University campus in India. The slogan for it was contributed by Gopal Shankarnarayanan (now SA in SC). It was held over a weekend and many independent thinkers like Flavia Agnes, Ratna Kapur and Indira Jaising participated. The group led by Kabir included Arvind Narain, Mathew John and the then President of NLS Meghana Abraham who was later with Amnesty for nearly 20 years. There was a lot of support from alumni as well including Vivek Divan.
Incidentally Kabir and Arvind were school classmates at Joseph's before they got into NLS. Arvind has spoken in an interview with NLS student zine about how Kabir was a great ally and helped him with his coming out process. Kabir is now an IL honcho and works with a UN agency.
