Anyone got any information on this supposedly new course provided by NUJS.

Didn't they already have a Bsc course of some kind.

Was going through the details and was taken aback by the fee structure.

4 lakhs for a Bsc LLB course! Outrageous if anything.

This officially makes NUJS the costliest NLU, the shamelessness to set your fee this high when you are barely placing in the top 5 rankings.

Is this course worth it?

Sham of a course and waste of university money and resources to feed the delusions of the VC, whose favourite subject is criminology. NUJS should instead have focused on industry-relevant courses: for example, a BSc LLB in cyber and tech law, or a BBA LLB in business law. They could have reached out to corporates and law firms, even foreign law firms, for partnerships. Which law firm will be partners for this course, with zero market potential? One exception could be Aquilaw, ▮▮▮ is devoted to defending TMC leaders accused in CBI and ED cases. The owner of Aquilaw and standing counsel for WB (Sanjay Basu) ▮▮▮ has close links with NUJS, so he can be a guest lecturer ▮▮▮. He may even invite the TMC’s favourite lawyers AM Singhvi, P Chidambaram and Suhaan Mukherji (another WB standing counsel) as guest lecturers, along with his illustrious clients ▮▮▮. But while ▮▮▮, there is far greater value in a market-relevant course mentored by Khaitan or AZB or CAM or Tata or Reliance or ITC or JSW etc etc. Curious to know what NUJS students and alumni think? Do you agree with me?

1. Many NLUs had stopped offering the BSc LLB course about a decade ago when there was a mandate that lab-based courses needed to be included in the curriculum for that. NUJS was one of those institutions.

2. This course includes forensic science courses. Substantial expenditure is being incurred for renting a new hostel, new academic building and building a lab. Given how the government barely provides any funding, it stands to reason that the university will try to recoup the costs from the students' fees only.

3. I personally believe that public universities should keep all courses affordable in an ideal world. However, this is not an ideal world. As for your comment on ranking, it lacks logic to the extent of expenditure for programmes not being dependent on what ranking an university has. Moreover, what you mentioned is simply not accurate. NUJS has always been within top 5 law institutions of the country by any and every metric ever since it started. I am not going to argue about its exact rank. The fact remains that most of the NLUs including NLSIU have increased their fees in the recent years. Is it a good thing for students? No. Is it the reality with decreasing state expenditure on NLUs and decision of the Centre not to fund NLUs? Yes. Including hostel fees, several NLUs charge close to 3.5 LPA for even their BA LLB courses.

4. For those actually facing financial problems, a couple of points that may help. SBI gives collateral free loans to every student who has got into NUJS. The same holds for NLSIU. It is part of their policy. The university also offers upto 100% tuition fee waiver as part of merit cum means scholarships.

Every NLU is trying to flesh out a new course in order to fund development. NLS started the 3-year LLB course which is nothing but a cash cow as it required funds for the massive infra push. Similarly, NLUO has opened one, GNLU has started a new campus and NUJS is also in the process of developing a 2nd campus.

Not NUJS ▮▮▮. Don't ever join a new course at nujs, that place is ticking time bomb for new courses.

The administration there is shameless, the audacity to charge 20 lakhs for a bsc llb course.

The need for this course stems from Industry demand. There is a huge demand for science background people in the industry. The IT industry in particular is in severe need of good lawyers from science background. NUJS has brought in forensics. NLU Bhopal has Cyber Crime.

The new course is being taught by same Professors as BALLB. The quality of teaching is equally good. Some students from upper middle class families (like me) find the environment bit tough due to different building and hostel than the campus. Even the dorms in the BALB campus, some people find it difficult to stay there, but it is a lot of fun after some time. Last year, no one knew about this course, so the cutoff went very low. But this year, the cutoff is likely to go much much lower. Check the syllabus on the web, the BA subjects are replaced by a few forensics subjects.

One of the guys told me that this was just supposed to be a troll it seems, but being put online on the web and NUJS have 4th all india ranking, it caused lots of people to drop the option.

My elder sister who works in HR tells me that companies mostly go by university ranking and your LLB score to offer packages.

But be warned, You need to have ability to pass the reasonably tough exams that NUJS has. If you do not have the ability, better choose a regular institute as per your regular ranking and go with BALLB, as there is a difference in difficulty of exams you will face.

Any program other than BA-LLB (e.g. BBA-LLB or BSc LLB) is more rigorous. This is because Business/Management and Science/Forensic Science are important heavyweight disciplines in their own right. Students have to give equal attention to both disciplines (i.e. business and law or science and law). This is unlike BA-LLB because the subjects in the BA portion are all over the place and are there only to fulfill credit requirements. You are right in saying that today there is a huge demand for lawyers who can code or those with science and tech backgrounds. State NLUs are falling behind on this curve. A BBA-LLB or a BSc-LLB program is far tougher than a BA-LLB. I agree.

Coming to WBNUJS - once it moves into the realms of forensic science, it is competing with NFSU. Being an INI, NFSU is and will remain far ahead. NFSU is a national university, far better funded, and the bellwether trend-setting institution. Nevertheless, it is good to see WBNUJS starting this program - at least it is more innovative than what KNLSIU has done by just increasing the intake of its BA-LLB program.

Yes, business/management and law dual degrees (e.g. JD-MBA or BBA-LLB) are offered by the world's top universities for a reason. It is the most synergistic combination of two strategic disciplines. Forensic Science is an upstream discipline that makes law (justice delivery) more effective.

Maybe you didn't know. WBNUJS faculty salary is one scale lower than NFSU's. Get over your high-horse attitude. The only reason a faculty from a national university goes to a state university is when comes with a promotion (e.g. an Assistant Professor from NFSU moving to WBNUJS as an Associate Professor). That is quite common. E.g. the VC of NLU Meghalaya was earlier the Dean of the School of Law at IIT KGP (a promotion). It is further evidence that national institutions provide the brainpower that state universities can benefit from. The flow is downwards.

Your ignorance is amusing. Everyone pays the 7th CPC, I said the salary scales are lower even within the 7th CPC. Just FYI, at this point NFSU's annual budget is more than the Top 10 State NLUs combined. It is clear that state NLUs are shaken by the advent and growth of NFSU, and that shows in the tone of your comments. That said, do you even realize that NFSU is merely a 3-year-old university, and look at the waves it is creating already?

I am contesting your claim, in case you didn't understand that. I have seen the salary slips of law faculty from both the places. As for budget, let's talk about the law department's budget only, since you're comparing with NLUs. It lacks most of the law databases that good NLUs take for granted these days. It has failed to recruit a single decent law faculty. Its students are not getting internships or winning competitions yet. Waves? What wave has the law department made other than anon PR on LI?

Now let me give you an even better metric. Budget per capita faculty. NFSU is way higher even on that metric. That's fair, right? Happy? Feel free to slice and dice the data the way you like, you will end up embarrassing yourself. The bottom line is that a state NLU can never compete with a national university.

You have got no idea about social sciences and the rigour involved in studying them, clearly. To say that courses like Economics, Political Science, Sociology etc. are lightweight subjects that are of no use in the real world is to reveal your colossal ignorance and misplaced sense of arrogance.

Yes, even English Literature and History, can be very rigorous - but they are useless. Secondly, the BA subjects covered in a BA-LLB are a hodge-podge of disciplines. Together they don't combine to form anything significant of practical relevance. BA-LLB in its current form (as taught in state NLUs) is outdated in content and applicability.

Even GNLU, SLS Pune, RGNLU, MNLU Mumbai, NLUJ, and NLIU Bhopal have MOUs with NFSU. State law schools are lining up to collaborate with NFSU. After you are done with shooting all in WBNUJS, the next targets should be the above for signing the MOUs. Come back when you are done. I will give more targets to shoot.
