If i had to sum it up in a single word-"average".

Was getting a seat in NALSAR but stupid me relied on fake NIRF rankings and chose NULD, and now i see my seniors who are constantly frustrated because of awfully average placements. NIRF means shit, i realised it last year when symbiosis made it to top 5.

This is an overstatement. NLUD’s placements are good and opportunities are definitely available but in absolute numbers, not as high as the older ones (NLS, NALSAR, NUJS and NLUJ). Percentage-wise, based on the number of folks who opt for placements, the numbers are good (around 70-80% on average, few batches had even 100%). A substantial portion do go for UPSC, graduate studies and litigation, and contrary to what people here say, most of them don’t do it because they can’t get a job but because they actually want to. Many of our UPSC toppers didn’t even sit for placements.

All the top foreign and Indian law firms come to recruit but I think places like NUJS and NALSAR tend to also bring in more tier-2 firms and PSUs to get more jobs, something NLUD RCCs had struggled to do as regularly, atleast when I was there. The lack of an established alumni base does make this more difficult, but that cannot be offset in the short-term.

Having graduated from NLUD, you do need a decent batch rank to get tier-1 firms (preferably, top 50% - when I was there the batch size was still 80). People that don’t maintain their grades will find it hard to land the top jobs unless they have other significant co-curricular interests/achievements.The people that are “frustrated” are usually folks that neglect academics and relevant internships till 4th year and then realise it’s too late by the time placement season/Day-Zero comes around. Otherwise, it’s not that difficult to get placed in a tier-1 firm from NLUD if you work hard.

NALSAR/NUJS didn't offset NLS' head start in 10 years. If you're claiming that by 2008, NALSAR had multiple partners in tier-1s, that's not true. They struggle to offset it even today. But to put it in context, the competition at the time was restricted to just 3-4 top NLUs. There's a lot more choice now with places like NLUJ, GNLU, JGLS, and some newer NLUs regularly churning out students joining tier-1s. Even if you look at the profile of many tier-1 or 2 partners, they come mostly from old NLUs (NLS dominates this by a large margin compared to NUJS and NALSAR), private places like SLS and ILS and traditional colleges like GLC. While NLUD does have a good alumni base, and I'm sure it'll improve it's not as easy to stand out as it was 15-20 years ago in the corporate field. This is coupled with the fact that many NLUD students opt for other careers now. I know many of my batchmates who left their tier-1 firms after 1-2 years of joining. But, the fact that placements have been consistently increasing since the first batch graduated is a good sign, imo.

True, by this logic, Columbia/Penn should have upset the dominance of the Harvard lobby in American high society (government/business/professions). Yet, the top 2 are generally accepted to be Harvard and Stanford, and the others in a distinct category below that. I see a similar trend here, just as NALSAR and NUJS were catching up with NLS, then came NLUD as a disruptor. Then when NLUD was settling into the number two slot, the newer NLUs started emerging. I see NLS entrenching itself further (it being a self-fulfilling sort of thing), NLUD fighting off competition for number 2, and the others all getting drawn into a cluster-f*ck in the upper-middle pack.

Well, there's an obvious answer why. Because that time firms were expanding and needed more and more quality graduates and there were much fewer good law schools. Those days of 100% placements are gone even at NLS now. And competing with just NLS (which had a batch size of just 80 at that time) is lot easier than competing with NLS, Nalsar, NUJS, NLUJ, GNLU, etc., which NLUD had to contend with. And yes, alumni do prefer their own institutions but usually they will try to avoid such conflicts of interest during recruitment.

Again with this UPSC myth. Yes, some alumni from NLUD have had success with the UPSC (from 2016 onwards), but it is at par with NLS/NALSAR in terms of numbers, and in fact, trailing both in terms of highest/flagship achievers (the best performance thus far has been NLS, followed by NALSAR). This is not to hate on NLUD, but when someone speaks of placements, one cannot add this only to the NLUD column as though it is some special feature of the Dwarka campus experience. Yes, NUJS has lately not been performing well at the UPSC, but that could be a general focus shift towards corp jobs there.

The UPSC thing attains relevance because a lot of the foundation for succeeding in the exam are laid down in the law school for many students, including optional and DAF stuff. You can claim UPSC is all individual effort but anyone who's done it will know it's not true. And what is "UPSC myth"? We've had top 100 rankers almost every year ever since the first batch graduated in 2013. NLUD has definitely over-achieved and dominated in the UPSC, and honestly our numbers in the top 100 ranks are much more than NALSAR's. We've had 2 top 10 rankers, the same as NLS, and NALSAR has had 1 a long while back in the past. That being said, places like ILS and even tier-2 NLUs also get good ranks in the UPSC. You can nitpick and claim that rank 5 is better than rank 8 or whatever, but the number of single/double-digit rankers in the UPSC from NLUD are a lot and it's been very consistent too. Maybe NLS is on the same level but they're some 20 years older. And sorry, but placements are pretty good, and while they could be better, no NLUD student who is good enough gets overlooked by someone from NALSAR or NUJS or even NLS. You can believe whatever you want though.

What's the current fee structure? Man, they get so much state funding plus all the AILET money, can't they give their own students a break? Do they have enough scholarships for all students who need it? I think financially well-placed law schools should also start litigation fellowships like GNLU did, that was a very good move to attract meritorious but needy law grads towards litigation over law firm jobs.

Nah, NLS is just much much older and by virtue of that, it has an established alumni legacy. That doesn’t imply superiority in the present. I see close to zero difference in ability between a majority of people at NLS vs NLUD. It’s lost its sheen a while back and with a massive batch size and increasing reservation, it’s going to struggle. The fact that you had to come over here to trash another rival NLU which you’re not even a part of clearly shows you have some insecurities.

so you see either the people in NLUD who submitted the NIRF report do not know how to calculate median or this is a deliberate lie by NLUD to bolster its ranking

Sad to see how this thread is full of comments by jealous and insecure students of rival NLUs who can't stand to see NLUD doing well and thriving without joining the CLAT (where it would be a number 2/3 preference for most). You might want to do some self-introspection first. Would you really be commenting if you weren't so insecure that NLUD is actually better than your law school? Let me give you can example, when SLS beat Nalsar in NIRF, people just brushed it aside and didn't take it seriously. Suppose if RMLNLU claims to be in the top 3 tomorrow, would you guys comment so fervently about it? No, you'd know that's not true in reality. But with NLUD, since its almost universally acknowledged that it's one of the best (regardless of NIRF), there's some kind of deep-lying insecurity among "older top 3" NLU grads. Grow up and focus on improving your own law school, people.

As for the kid who's calling the placements "average", you clearly haven't been to any of the other NLUs and seen how shit law placements can really be. Firms don't even come to recruit. NLUD is one of the only colleges that actually has a good track record despite barely any alumni base. If NUJS were formed in 2008, I assure you their placements would be as good as NLUO's and others. Get out of your all-day stoner gang and start working hard, you'll find that getting a job isn't all that difficult and people aren't "frustrated" unless they've just been slacking around expecting the college to present them a job on a silver platter. Or maybe you should've gone to NALSAR to laze around some more and then land some tier-2 firm/in-house through alumni connections.

Had that been the case, then the number of AILET takers would have been equal to the number of CLAT takers. The stats don't support your claim. Further, what do law aspirants know about these places anyway other than hearsay or tropes fed by coaching centres? In the legal industry, be it law firms, or litigation or any other sphere, no such superior treatment is accorded to NLUD grads, sorry to burst your bubble. Nor do they do better in any law student-related metric, like competition wins, internships or the like.

The only reason the number of AILET and CLAT takers isn’t the same is because AILET is just for 120 seats at ONE NLU. So people would naturally feel their chances of getting in are low and may want to save their money. Or maybe some people don’t want to join NLUD. I remember when NLAT happened, only some 25K people applied to NLS. Does that mean NLS is bad? Point being that almost every serious law aspirant takes both exams and the competition is similar. The extra 30K CLAT kids that get 5-digit ranks aren’t really competition.

This entire thread somewhat captures the petty competitiveness among tier-1 NLU students. It's a well-known fact that NALSAR (not as much as NUJS) and NUJS have obviously stagnated in the past decade but rather than reverse that, their graduates/students would rather have NLUD also doing badly so they can feel superior about their own mediocrity.

Having been on this forum for quite a few years now, I've always seen baseless accusations are being thrown around about newer law schools like NLUD, GNLU and JGLS, presumably by NUJS students who suffer the most when other law schools rise above them. Students of NLUJ and even NLIU don't engage in such regular mud-slinging which at least shows their humility. My advice to you guys would be to get a life. Stop being so petty about rankings. If you consider yourself a real top 3 then there's no reason for such insecurity. If you don't like NIRF, then ignore it, but stop desperately trying to convince aspirants not to take it seriously and join NUJS for corporate jobs instead. You're purposely misleading them and the aim of NLUs was never to produce socially irrelevant corporate slaves. That's a trend led by NLS (atleast in the past), Nalsar and NUJS students which has distorted the meaning and objective of a holistic legal education.

Who is misleading whom? If NUJS brags about corporate jobs, then that's because they have it. Just because you can't brag about any student achievement that NUJS grads don't have, that shouldn't make you excrete such stuff. All this talk about holistic education is supposed to show something. Be it litigation, jobs, scholarships, moots, entrepreneurship, policy bodies, NUJS grads are there in all the spheres and will continue to be so regardless of what you claim. We don't even need AILET takers to join us. The hallmark of a good place is that it takes in a student and helps them achieve their best potential. It's NLUD trolls who on the other hand keep claiming that they are great, but cannot show anything other than NIRF ranks to prove that and then turns deaf when questioned about their submission of fake data, or falling publication records.
