Do you solemnly agree to all of the above?
First, Avinash Desai Reddy from the 2005 batch has now been designated as the first senior advocate before the Supreme Court of India.
Second, Rupavardhini Raju from the 2010 batch, who used to be an IAAS officer, has now joined Pembroke College, Oxford as a faculty member.
Third, Justice Indira Banerjee has now agreed to join NUJS as a Distinguished Visiting Professor, soon after Justice Lalit did the same after his retirement.
In the middle of all the chaos, controversies, naysaying and doomsday predictions for the place, it is good to know about such positive developments.
1. Re Avinash Reddy and R Raju, no doubt fantastic achievements but these are student achievements and that too of the early batches. I don't think anyone said anything negative against the NUJS students of earlier batches, did they?
2. Re Indira Banerjee, well, NKC may be better than Bhat and Talukdar, but that isn't saying much because those 2 were the worst VCs of any NLU ever. The acid test is whether NKC can set up a governing body of the quality that existed during the Menon-MPS-Chimni years, resist interference from the TMC, attract good faculty like they did and Sudhir Krishnaswamy is doing, and attract private sector funding. I'm afraid this has not happened and instead some good faculty have left.
I would rather ask:
- Why can't be Rupavardhini be VC Of NUJS, or at least have professor rank? If you think she'd rather go abroad, what about alumni in India, like Nemika Jha of Jindal (2005 batch gold medalist). Why can't such people at least be on the EC/GC instead of obscure people?
- Similarly, why can't Avinash Reddy be a part of the EC/GC?
- Will Indira Banerjee teach? Good if she does, but what about the mediocre and unqualified people teaching?
People should give it a rest with EC/GC membership. Those are not laddoos to be distributed. There's no 'alumni reserved seat' on those bodies. For that to happen, the parent legislation needs to be changed and that is under government control. Now if you want to say that the current government would do no favour to the university and should be criticised, I am all for that. Not that people would flock to become EC/GC members from other parts of the country and run over to join every meeting anyway. The IIMC Director has been a member for ages, they hardly attend any meeting despite being in the same city. One has to be practical in such matters. Of course better people can be appointed to those bodies. That does not mean one should fixate on only that at the cost of ignoring positive developments about the university. Where do you even hide such colossal negativity, in the Cess Pool?
