It happened at South Calcutta Law College, part of Calcutta University. The attackers were barred from entering campus for a few days but are now off the hook. The college's governing body is headed by Ashok Deb, TMC MLA and NUJS governing board member. The fresher says that Deb was present in college during when of the instances of assault and intimidation took place.

He says not only was he beaten up but he was asked to pay money to the TMC union. He says he was slapped, punched, choked, his hair pulled and beaten relentlessly. He says his father was then attacked and his mother was also going to be attacked but they stopped from attacking his mother after he pleaded with them. ABP Ananda has also interviewed senior politicians from the BJP and Left, both of whom have condemned the attack and blamed the TMC for institutionalising such violence.

2) The TV9 headline is: ‘তৃণমূল ছাত্র পরিষদ না করলে পড়াশোনা করতে পারবে না’, বিস্ফোরক অভিযোগ আইন কলেজের ছাত্রের

OP here. The moderator changed the title. In my view, the title was unfairly changed to give a pro-TMC tilt to the story, as the probe was a sham.

Also, I never used the word "ragging" in the title, which is misleading. What happened was assault, battery and extortion.

Prima facie, definitely alleged ragging (which was first reported around a month ago). Regarding assault, battery and extortion, that is only allegedly. Neither you nor we know enough about the situation or were there. It's quite possible the college covered something up, or that there wasn't enough evidence, or many other factors. It's also possible the political element was ancillary to the situation, rather than the core trigger.

The only recent part in this story is that the university has concluded its probe and that the complainant disagrees.

In short: please keep your headlines factual, balanced and less over-sensational / hyperbolic / Republic TV, and it will save us time editing them.

Well, unfortunately nobody except the parties know exactly what went on. It does prima facie seem likely there was ragging, but unless someone does a proper investigation on this, or an appeal, or the full report becomes public, it is very hard for us outsiders to conclude exactly what happened and whether there was a political motive as alleged or it was ragging or something else.

Of course it's possible that the TMC is getting more political and violent in WB, but there's also a lot of organised propaganda / rants being posted regularly on LI against one of the few opposition party remaining, so we will err on the side of caution with re-publishing any claims or headlines that appear intentionally unbalanced or disingenuous.

No, but let's make sure that the title and content are not one-sided propaganda texts but actually plainly state the facts at known, do not indulge in conjecture selling this as fact, and are conducive to an intelligent discussion rather than just rants.

Which admin personnel is a TMC member exactly? Either name people with evidence, or else the mod should treat that comment as contested at the very least if not trollish. As for students leaning towards TMC, lol! That alone shows that you're not a student, only posing badly as one.

Given the nature of the founding statute, a determined state government can interfere with the administration and has made life difficult for NUJS. But that is not the same as University being 'full of TMC workers"

Ashok Deb is the member of the highest and most important NUJS governing body, which is the General Council. In fact, the GC is loaded with TMC politicians and overt sympathisers.

Stop passing off your random opinions as facts. GC is a titular body at best, it doesn't have anything to do with the actual functioning of the university. It hardly meets once every year before the convocation to officially approve the degrees and to listen to the random suggestions that the Chancellor makes. This guy, Ashok Deb, assuming he's still a member, has either not appeared in the past meetings or kept silent, so hardly the pillar of influence that you're insinuating. EC has always been the real decision making body and that has TMC people like the law minister. Focus on that if you want to criticise.

Strangely enough, this person/persons who keeps posting about the declining situation in Bengal because of TMC and trying to connect it with NUJS, never has anything to say about the hundreds of instances of mismanagement and violence that is propagated by the BJP, RSS, VHP and ABVP across multiple other colleges and universities across the country over the last few years, including institutions of excellence like JNU and even the IITs. Clearly shows where their loyalties lie.
