They might not get much visibility, but you can be sure that every generation of law students will have some fighting for social causes: it's still part of the DNA of being a lawyer (even if corporate law has been taking over).
There was a time when students would actually militate and organise and try and help folks who worked on their campus. When students would take part in clinical courses with honesty and enthusiasm because they wanted to be useful to society. Now they’ll take a picture for the gram , make some posts on Twitter and then disappear.
Silent Generation: Born between 1928 and 1945
Boomers: Born between 1946 and 1964
Gen X: Born between 1965 and 1980
Gen Y: Born between 1990 and 1996
Gen Z: Born between 1997 and 2012
Let's see what this means in an Indian law school context:
Silent Generation: Upendra Baxi, MP Singh, NL Mitra Madhav Menon, VS Mani etc: A generation educated in TLCs and which either set up top-ranked (NLUs NLSIU, NUJS, NLUJ and GNLU) or played a key role in the early years of top-ranked NLUs. This generation grew app after WW 2 and went to college during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s, so it often leans progressive.
Boomers: BS Chimni, Ranbir Singh, Amita Dhanda, Faizan Mustafa, Bimal Patel etc: A generation that partly set up some top-ranked NLUs (NALSAR, NLUD), plus some newer NLUs (like NLUO).
Gen X: Sudhir Krishnaswamy, Shamnad Basheer, C Raj Kumar, Prabhash Ranjan etc: A generation that represents a new confident breed of NLU grads, plus DU/GLC grads educated abroad. Credited with making major changes to existing NLUs and of course setting up Jindal
Gen Y: The majority of profs at Jindal and new NLSIU hires: NLU educated (often with foreign degrees), very different mindset from Boomers, some similarity with Gen X. A generation sandwiched between olden day orthodox values and modern day progressive values. A generation that benefited from neoliberalism and globalisation and may deviate from the Nehruvian consensus.
Gen Z: Recent graduates, current students and law aspirants. VERY VERY VERY different from earlier generations. This is the generation of Malala and Greta that is deeply rooted in values of social justice, progressivism and gender justice.
