They were celebrated because it was the age of promise. It was the age when people started looking forward to things. It was the iphone decade of the century where everything was coming together and things were just preparing for launch.
There was purity, innocence and optimism. There was real hunger to do and to achieve. There was a lot to create and build. There was discovery and adventure (precisely because there were no distractions).

- Birth of the WTO and neoliberalism
- Birth of Hindtuva: Babri masjid, Gujarat riots etc
- Rampant homophobia (peaking during the AIDS crisis)
- Rampant racism, sexual harassment
- Bill Clinton getting away with basically gaslighting women
Tech:
- Absence of high-speed internet: no downloading movies
- Absence of smartphones
- Absence of social media
- No PS and XBox
Music and films:
- No Netflix
- No Breaking Bad, GoT etc
- Stale music
Sport:
- No T20, lots of low-quality cricket
- No Federer, Nadal and Djokovic
