Eh moneys only a part of it. Teaching really sucks when you have to do it in a bad environment. Especially because academics invest so much of themselves into their jobs. I’d rather teach a small group of highly motivated kids for less pay than have to lecture to a large number of apathetic ones. Whether or not the administration will back you up when push comes to shove matters too. As does research time and advancement opportunities. Honestly the difference between nls and jgls is not that much. It’s not money that will change your lifestyle unless you have a lot of debt or a family to take care of. The rest of the stuff is what you should be concerned about.

What you are saying that is that you wish to focus more on research and less on teaching. That is indeed the European model, but it is not an Indian one so far. Law schools here are focused on catering to undergrads, and the expectation is that will be their priority. Research is over and above that. I'm not saying that is an ideal position, but few public institutions here can afford to justify any other stance.

Of course it is possible to get a job in the West, perhaps even a permanent one in some particular European countries, but the question is: are there any credible alternatives in India? It sucks to be in this position, you know, because I really want to teach in India. I can contribute to research on Indian issues from anywhere in the world, that is not the problem.

Hear me out: At NLUs (no idea about private), I have to teach for 2-4 hours DAILY, which I have to do here fortnightly leaving actual time for research and other things. So it is also not JUST about money, even when JGLS pays 3x that what NLUs may pay. European universities pay 6-7x (US universities would pay 8-9x but living costs are 2x that of Europe). For the record, many NLUs just do not even bother granting interviews to foreign-qualified candidates: happened with me and too many friends for it to be a mere coincidence; not speaking about NLS though - have no experience.

I was thinking Ashoka may be legit quite good because they have a thin teaching load but they do not have a law school (even though they have some law subjects taught in other degrees) so they need only a couple of law professors which they already have.

Moreover, if I want to have a family, I do need a stable job location-wise, you see; I just cannot work for five years in Delhi, then five in Mumbai and then Bangalore. It would be unreasonable to demand that from my partner.

Public universities following 7th pay commission salary scale pays around 80000 per month to a fresher as assistant professor. You can just google to get the UGC basic salary slab for all posts and add central DA percentage, HRA and TA to it. An Associate Professor starts with around 1.8 lakhs per month. A Professor with around 2.1 lakhs per month. There's an annual increment of about 3% to the basic salary. Some universities provide perks like mediclaim, fund for children's studies etc.

Few private universities pay that salary, most pay less. Jindal pays much more, but it will differ for differently people based on negotiation. Freshers recruited as junior or senior research associates there with foreign LLM degree usually start with around 1-1.2 lakh per month. Assistant Professors with around 1.5.
