Most of them are banks too. Which are well known. Most know them as banks as opposed to IBs. An average Joe may not even know what IB is. True for a lot fo above average Joes as well. - Not an IB
Maybe because JP Morgan has a turnover 60 times that of say a magic circle firm like Linklaters/A&O and has about 100 times the number of employees and is active in almost every country?
Lawyers aren't meant to be seen. If we are very public, approaching us for advise becomes problematic for the people who can pay for it. Discretion is the name of the game. We guard secrets people wouldn't even tell their priest.
It's also why we stand right at the back during our client's funerals. So we can quickly make an exit before someone starts talking to us about the estate.

Investment Banking is not really that difficult as many of us have perceived it to be, the only thing is that it's technical and to an outsider, this constant usage of technical verbatim among the IBs often seems as if it is an out of world profession. But in reality, its just another profession intending to defend late-capitalism.
I used to think that because the average joe doesn't care about memorandum of associations, it is only right that people have not heard of the biggest law firms in the world (indian law firms ki to baat bhi kya hee karu) but to me, investment banking is something which is even more difficult to understand for average people - then why are JP morgan, Goldman Sachs etc so well known?
