Pros and cons - I have seen friends go through it, try out entirely different practice areas, and then settle for one. Internships barely prepare one for actually experiencing what a practice area is like, so the ATP thing helps.
As far as cons are concerned, you are effectively losing out a year of actual experience in that practice area if you choose three different seats in your 18 months.
