This is a totally misinformed tweet. This is the problem with our Senior Advocates. They think they are experts on everything. A lot of the content on Hotstar is regional and they also broadcast the IPL and other sports. In contrast, there is no sports on Netflix and most of their content is international. In general, Netflix aims at an elite audience, which is barely 0.5% of the population. On the other hand, Hotstar aims for the masses. Another difference is that Disney has a huge portfolio of kids content. Also, there is a lot of piracy because Netflix subscriptions are expensive, unlike Hotstar. This is the real reason, nothing to do with woke versus non-woke.
Your argument explains the reasons for disparity between the amount of subscribers Netflix and Hotstar have since they launched their operations in India. However nothing much has changed about Hotstar and Netflix apart from the excessive woke content. This downward spiral of Netflix isnโt an Indian phenomenon but a global one. While what AMS says could be debated but one cannot deny that platforms which promote excessive woke content are facing in terms of decline in subscribers be it Netflix or anyone platform.
Elon Musk started this lie about Netflix making losses for being woke. That man is a stupid troll just like his bhakt followers. Netflix pulled out off Russia, so obviously they will make losses. Also, the stupid RW people bashing Netflix are the first ones to watch pirated versions of their shows.
But I agree with AMS's tweet today about Archies. Who the F wants to watch a second-rate Indian remake of Archie comics starring nepo kids? Riverdale was a good remake but this one will suck big time.
People are rightly slamming it on social media. The global economy is in freefall and people are struggling, but now you shove these privileged nepo brats down our throats. Disgusting and insensitive!
This fantastic tweet explains why others are doing well and Netflix is declining:
Prime - 999 per year. Comes with priority delivery on Amazon Hotstar - 899/year. IPL, Grandslams along with other content SonyLIV - 499/year. EPL, Roland Garros and other content Voot - 249/year. ATP, FIFA, BWF and other content
Netflix takes 500 per month and produces this [Archies]
I don't know man, you say that woke content is not the reason why Netflix is decling and then talk about how they cater to elite 0.5 percent population, if you make content targeting less than 1 percent of population, you're bound to decline and loose to competitors. Most of Netflix's content may be international but then again their collection is not as large as it is in US or Europe. Shows and movies about lives of elites by casting star kids might have been attractive to people a decade ago but as it is now it just invokes resentment.
There's a possibility that Netflix is suffering because of marginal economics.
For broadcasters, their OTT platforms are just another place to earn more without incurring marginal costs. For Netflix, the OTT is the only place where they earn revenue. After Netflix demonstrated viability of OTT and with all major broadcasters starting their own OTT platforms, the marginal economics have turned against Netflix.
In the end, it is all about quality. Unfortunately, there is a lot of crap on Netflix. I thought Kaali Kaali Ankhen, Mai etc were total crap. Then there is Archies: a shit Bollywood remake of Riverdale with nepo kids. That is the reason they will lose subscribers.
