Very logical and smart observation.
1. NLSIU Strawberry Fields (Great collection of Indie artists from Bangalore and Mumbai, have seen many emerging bands give one of their first performances here.)
2. Outlawed (NUJS Kolkata - they throw the best parties, plus were among the earliest to give platform to Nucleya, Local Train and the likes.)
3. SLS Pune Symbhav (Good on money, so good at calling already established Indie bands).
3. NH-65 (NLU - Jodhpur -they have been doing well in recent years, timing with other fests in Jaipur/Rajasthan around the same time, makes it a good trip.)
My rankings are a bit biased towards fests that have helped emerging indie bands because that is honestly, one of the primary functions for a music festival.
Also, do keep in mind though that the above rankings are based on my personal experience prior to the pandemic. Post pandemic, there is going to be a drastic change in campus cultures since more than 2 years of online classes have resulted in new batches having no idea of prior college cultures. It can also be a great opportunity for establishing fresher, more vigorous and more open/inclusive cultures across all law colleges.
With fragmentation across college fests - is easier for an 'only much louder' to offer a takeover in return for upfront cash. The downside of this approach is less innovation at grassroot, as they already have a curation in mind.
Independence, even if in one's own fiefdom, will not sustain if there is internecine war. Especially with a 5 year floating crowd of organizers that change each passing year.
Please don't quote wiki for SF, there are several shadow armies of volunteers who have worked on the rest to ensure the fields of sound (Motherjane) are relevant for each generation. However, that does not give anyone the right to denegrate other college level fests - as it is (a) conduit for bands, (b) for audience, and (c) free speech for the dumb (Metallica). A better cohesive answer characterisation is how to structure fests across the year and country to ensure wider diversity of artists and institutional protection for speech / sound.
