no one in my family is a lawyer what extra steps should i be takin to make it big like what kind of skills ( communication ) etc which i can develop in ug and which would ultimately help me in law school

I am personally against a CS degree as it's an added burden with a little ROI these days but yes to a certain extent it's beneficial. In law firms, it will be not in any manner but there are in-house counsel positions where a CS degree can be used but again there also it is not mandatory for hiring.

Coming to the colleges both of them are good and getting into them is very difficult as they are highly competitive. Try aiming for both and as per your circumstances choose one.

I cleared my CS with B.Com (Accounting and Finance). I did CS because I did not want to do CA. I would recommend CS, only if you do not want to waste your 3 years doing only B.Com. No, I had no internship experience till B.Com (3rd Year). I got my first internship in 2nd year of 3 year law course.

TBH enjoy your UG right now you are just in your first year! Doing courses such as CA/CS helps but they will not make you in any manner a better corp lawyer than someone who does not have them. Most people don't have these degrees and they have done fine for themselves by making a career in corporate law. Having a CA degree will help you in tax and becoming a tax lawyer but as you want to do corporate law I don't think it will help you much.

I work at a tax team of my firm and we also don't have many CAs with us so you can see that a CA degree won't be of much help. In law school, your internship experience, your moot courts, and your publications are more desirable than your degrees because what they teach and what you practice are very different. My general advice is that if you think you can do CA because it's a very difficult degree to get. Try to do that and then do an MBA as with MBA going abroad is much easier.

1. Understand the basics concepts of accounting and taxation well. Working knowledge of accounts such as reading and interpretation of financial statements would be ideal. This will put you a league where NLU grads will find it difficult to compete,

2. Be prepared to be 'judged' to an extent because you are a non-NLU and from a 3 year law course. You may have to forego great opportunities because it could be unfair to the 5-year NLU grad, getting equally paid. Please be prepared for an unfair treatment. You will have to give your 1.5x to secure a job which an NLU gets it without any effort. They will find them bankable and not you, you may call this as a perception, but its a fact.

3. I would suggest, CA. Please make that your priority, till the first 3 years. If you understand each concepts well, you will have an upper hand over your legal peers in next 3 years.

4. From the first year of law, understand the basic framework of law in India, not corporate law. Focus on interpretation of statues, learn the difference between an Act, Regulations, Rules, Order, etc. Get the conceptual clarity. Emphasize on achieving conceptual clarity.

5. Third sem onwards, focus on internships - try for 3 months at a stretch, not 1 month. Focus on research and interpersonal skills. Do the same for next 3 months as well.

6. Lastly, from the 4 sem onwards, focus on interning with Corporate Team, learn and observe what they do, how they draft and review. In your last year, you should atleast know 7-9 basics of corporate law, and any 2 intricate concepts - which you should be able to confidently explain. Don't be a part of the A1, A2 race, focus on learning and asking maximum questions, even if its dumb (3 year law course student are anyways not considered smart) ask them as much as you can. Let them think what they want, be shameless in asking seniors or peers or juniors as well.

By following the above mentioned steps and with a pinch of good luck (more than that), you may secure a position with a good firm. Tier 1 will be a challenged but stick to core areas, in next 2 years you will get a shot a tier 1.

P.S. - Don't give-up, if any HR's or a Partner or any Associate treats you badly or belittle you or embarrass you, in fact, you will come across HR's who has more attitude than an EP or MP.
FYI - I am a non-NLU, 3 year law college student from a Tier 3 city working at Tier 1 law firm as an Associate/SA. I am just sharing my experience.

I am first year student pursuing Bachelors In Accounting and Finance from a good college in mumbai (teir 1 in mumbai having Internship opportunity in b4(risk,tax, audition) , startup marketing profile internship, competitions, seminars, good enough societies (altough not of level of DU north campus.
I am delhiite went to mumbai just for UG because my class 12 marks (94percent) were not enough for DU north campus and I was only getting sputh campus college of DU and I wanted a good college which has some brand name , internship opportunity etc.
I want to be a corporate lawyer and plan to pursue 3 year llb from
1.NLU banglore, 2. GlC , 3. ClC DU
I see these 3 options in front of me to make best use of remaining 2 year of UG to maximise my chances of getting top teir corporate law firm job.
According to you for becoming a successful Corporate Lawyer by pursuing 3 year llb route how should i spend my remaining 2 year of UG

1.)Should I be Doing CA or CA inter in my remaining UG years and then get into law school
2.) Should I focus on Only college UG (acads, extra curricular, competition, internship) and prepare simultaneously to get through top law school for llb or
3.)Should I be pursuing CS along with bcom and then LLB.

What kind of skill sets should i develop to become a corporate lawyer like you.

What important steps can i take while i am still in my UG and yet to start law school.
