It's annoying to repeatedly tell interns to not say Sir... i tell them "I was in fifth year when you were your in your first year - why are you calling me sir" and then realise this Sir / Maam culture has penetrated some law schools. Makes me ick, tbh.
Rule of thumb - do not call anyone below 35 sir or maam. Personally use Sir/ma'am only for senior partners and only if others are doing the same. Same with clients - go ahead and call them by their first name - you are a professional giving them services, there is no need to place them above you in some heirarchy.
Its better to call Partners, Clients and more elderly/senior Counsel Sir/Ma'am until they tell you not to.
call the rest by Mr. lastname.
